The 2026 Subaru Outback was unveiled at the New York International Auto Show in April 2025, marking a significant redesign for the model. This change comes as the crossover SUV segment, which the Outback helped pioneer, has grown to become the world’s largest automobile category.
For Japanese Subaru fans, the notable aspect is the possibility that this new model may not be limited to the North American market. With the Legacy Outback ending its Japanese sales in March 2025, there’s a scenario where the Outback could make a comeback in the Japanese market around December 2026.

The new Outback features a bold new design, evolving from its previous wagon-like silhouette to a more rugged and traditional SUV look. It also comes with advanced technology and off-road capabilities.

The interior has been revamped with a 12.1-inch multimedia display and a 12.3-inch full digital meter cluster, standard across all grades. The display features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Automotive processor, significantly improving computing performance and responsiveness.

The Outback is available in seven trims for the North American market, including the Wilderness, which is an off-road-focused model. The engine options include a 2.5L naturally aspirated and a 2.4L turbocharged boxer engine, paired with a Lineartronic CVT and Symmetrical AWD.
The new Outback also features next-generation EyeSight driver-assist technology, including active braking for frontal and side collisions, and an emergency stop assist function.

With its enhanced capabilities, the Outback is expected to be a strong competitor in the Japanese SUV market, appealing to both existing Subaru users looking to upgrade and premium import SUV owners.

While there’s no official announcement on the Japanese release, the possibility of it happening around December 2026 is gaining traction. For the latest information, it’s recommended to check the official Subaru website and authorized dealers.
