About the new Corolla Cross

Toyota has added the new Corolla Cross to its lineup, and it went on sale in Japan on September 14, 2021. The Corolla Cross boasts specifications that surpass those of other companies, including the Corolla -based TNGA platform (GA-C) , the proven and highly acclaimed inline-four DOHC 1.8L + motor (THS II) engine adopted from the fourth-generation Prius , and the next-generation Toyota Safety Sense as standard equipment on all vehicles.

Engine options for the new Corolla Cross

There are two engines to choose from: “gasoline” and “hybrid.” You can also choose the grade from “S,” “G,” and “Z.” The first thing that bothers you is choosing the engine.

G grade features

Corollacross

Corolla Cross G grade

The G grade is the entry-level model and is the cheapest.

If you select the G grade hybrid Corolla Cross, you can purchase it for as little as 2,760,000 yen. The exterior features Bi-Beam LED headlights, turn signals, clearance lights, and 17-inch steel wheels. The interior features fabric seats and a single color. However, options such as a panoramic roof, blind spot monitor, and 9-inch display audio cannot be installed.

Disadvantages of G grade

Personally, the biggest disadvantage of the G grade is that many rental cars and car sharing vehicles use the S grade , so if you see a Harrier owner in town, you can tell it’s a rental car. If you own a Corolla Cross, I recommend choosing the G grade or higher.

S grade features

Corollacross

Corolla Cross S grade

The S grade is a mid-range model that offers a good deal, and if you select the hybrid S grade, you can purchase it from 2,980,000 yen. Unlike the G grade, the exterior features a black front lower grille, metallic frame, and metallic rear lower bumper, giving it a Corolla Cross-like design. Furthermore, it features 17-inch aluminum wheels, and the interior has been significantly redesigned, with a wide range of options available for both the Z and S grades, including a 7.0-inch TFT color multi-information display, fabric seats, a panoramic roof, blind spot monitors, and a 9-inch display audio system.

Z grade characteristics

Corollacross

Corolla Cross Z grade

The Z grade is a premium model, and some may find it a little pricey. However, if you select the gasoline Z grade, you can purchase it for as little as 3,250,000 yen. This is just over the 3 million yen mark. However, the exterior design includes 18-inch aluminum wheels exclusive to the Z grade, Bi-Beam LED headlamps, LED sequential turn lamps, LED clearance lamps, and LED daytime running lamps , so you can tell it’s a Z grade just by looking at it.

COROLLA CROSS 2023

Corolla Cross Z grade

The interior comes standard with a combination of genuine leather and fabric seats and a 12.3-inch full LCD meter, and you can see the difference when you ride in it. Only the Z grade comes standard with a power back door and an electric driver’s seat.

Until hybrids pay for themselves

This was a very difficult question when considering fuel economy and price. When comparing both grades “Z”, the hybrid model is 2,900,000 yen and the hybrid model is 3,250,000 yen, a difference of 350,000 yen . Furthermore, the hybrid model is eligible for an eco-car tax reduction of about 30,000 yen, so the total difference is about 320,000 yen.

Here we will calculate the cost of gasoline, and examine how much you need to drive to make up for the gasoline cost of about 320,000 yen. Based on the actual fuel consumption figures listed above,

Fuel economy for gasoline vehicles (2WD) is calculated as WLCT mode fuel economy: 14.4km/L (12.0km/L) Fuel economy for hybrid vehicles (2WD) is calculated as WLCT mode fuel economy: 26.2m/L (22.0km/L).

If gasoline price is 170 yen per liter

  • Gasoline model 10,000km = 141,667 yen
  • Hybrid car 10,000km = 77,273 yen

After 10,000km, the difference is 64,394 yen, so after 50,000km, the difference is 321,970 yen. In other words, this still doesn’t make up the difference of 350,000 yen in the price of the car itself…

Even if you consider that you’re likely to sell your new car after about five years or 100,000km, choosing a hybrid car will cost an additional 293,940 yen. Just because it’s a hybrid doesn’t mean you can choose it lightly. Furthermore, in the case of the Corolla Cross, there’s no difference in the exterior design between it and a hybrid, so you can’t be too proud of it.

About comfort

So far we’ve been talking about price, but this time I’d like to touch on comfort as well.

The “2.0L direct injection inline 4-cylinder engine Dynamic Force Engine + Direct Shift-CVT” model is excellent in terms of price, but not in terms of comfort. I have driven the 2.0L gasoline models of the third-generation Harrier and fourth-generation RAV4, and found them to be very slow to start. This is due to a lack of torque relative to the vehicle’s weight, and even if the Super CVT-i has been improved, it will still feel slow.

On the other hand, the “Inline 4-cylinder DOHC 1.8L + Motor (THS II)” uses Toyota’s specialty hybrid system, and because it starts off using only the motor, you can feel the strength of the torque. In fact, only this hybrid engine specification is used in overseas models, proving that its driving performance is acceptable in overseas markets.

Furthermore, when using radar cruise control, there is a high possibility that it will make a big difference in comfort, as electric control and hybrids work well together. If comfort is a priority, we recommend a hybrid car.

summary

In addition to the grades “S,” “G,” and “Z,” choosing between a hybrid and a gasoline-powered vehicle can be a difficult decision. Gasoline-powered vehicles are cheaper overall, but if you’re looking for a comfortable ride, you should also consider a hybrid.

In terms of exteriors, the “Z” is superior to the “G” and “S.” The “Z” is packed with features that enhance its appearance and convenience, such as “chrome-plated front and rear,” “LED sequential turn lamps and daytime running lights,” “rear combination lamps,” and “18-inch aluminum wheels.”

The interior of the “Z” is also well-equipped, with features such as a power tailgate, genuine leather and fabric seats, and heated seats as standard. It also comes equipped with a full range of advanced technology and safety features, so you can choose with confidence. For a car priced over 3 million yen, if the difference is only 300,000 yen, you can’t go wrong by choosing the “Z.”

conclusion

In conclusion, the most recommended model for the new Corolla Cross is the “Z” grade, which is equipped with many of the latest features . If you have a larger budget, we recommend choosing the “Z Hybrid” model and proceeding with the negotiations.
