The new EV sedan “MAZDA EZ-6” to be launched in China was officially announced at the 2024 Beijing Motor Show, which began on April 25, 2024. It was initially said to be released in China in 2024, but is now scheduled for release in the European market. At this time, there has been no announcement of a launch in the Japanese market, and it is unclear whether there will be one in the future.

About the Mazda “EZ-6”

The new EV model, the Mazda EZ-6, is a five-door sedan, and as rumored, it has a design that makes it the successor to the Mazda 6. The front design uses Mazda’s signature Kodo design, and the rear is the first Mazda vehicle to feature horizontal taillights with the Mazda logo placed in the center.

It shares the same EPA1 platform as the Deepal SL03 electric sedan for the Chinese market, which is manufactured by Mazda’s joint venture partner in China, Changan.

Its overall length is 4,921 mm, its width 1,890 mm, and its height 1,485 mm. The powertrain lineup includes an EV model and a PHEV (range extender) model. The EV model is available with a 58.9 kWh or 66.8 kWh battery pack driving a rear electric motor in the form of a maximum output of 215 hp (160 kW) and a maximum torque of 236 lb-ft (320 Nm). Alternatively, the EV model will use a motor with a maximum output of 255 hp (190 kW) and a maximum torque of 236 lb-ft (320 Nm).

The car has a 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution (BEV), a strut-type front suspension, and a multi-link rear suspension, as well as an electric rear spoiler to improve stability at high speeds. The BEV model has a range of approximately 600km, while the PHEV model is expected to go over 1,000km on a single tank of fuel.

As the front grille is an electric vehicle, you can see that it has a very impressive design.

This includes a 14.6-inch infotainment display and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. There’s also a flat-bottom steering wheel, a bespoke centre console, slim air vents and an ambient lighting system.

Will the Mazda EZ-6 be introduced to the Japanese market?

It is unclear at this point, but personally I feel that it could be introduced into the Japanese market, given that it is an electric vehicle, there are range extender models in the lineup, and it can travel more than 1,000 km (621 miles) on a single refueling.

Future trends in the European market and the rollout of range extenders will remain key points to watch. It will also be interesting to see how the technology sharing partnership with China’s Changan affects Mazda’s electrification strategy. We will continue to update you as new information becomes available.
