Suzuki will achieve a cumulative production of 30 million automobiles in India by the end of March 2024. India is the second country after Japan to reach the milestone, and achieving the milestone in 40 years and four months since production began in December 1983 is the fastest, beating Japan’s record of 55 years and two months.
Maruti Suzuki India
Suzuki’s first production vehicle, the Maruti 800, rolled off the line at Maruti Udyog, the predecessor of current subsidiary Maruti Suzuki, in December 1983. Currently, 16 models are produced at three plants: Maruti Suzuki’s Gurgaon Plant and Manesar Plant, and Suzuki Motor Gujarat’s Gujarat Plant, including the compact cars Wagon R, Swift, and Baleno, and the SUVs Brezza and Frontex.
The future of Maruti Suzuki in India
The current annual production capacity is 2.25 million units, and in preparation for the future expansion of the Indian four-wheel vehicle market, the company plans to secure a production capacity of approximately 4 million units by fiscal 2030, with plans to start operations at the new Karkoda plant in Haryana in 2025 and the new Gujarat plant in Gujarat in fiscal 2028.
