Mitsubishi Motors’ “eK Cross EV” and Nissan’s “Sakura” reach cumulative production of 100,000 units in about 1 year and 10 months

On March 21, 2024, Nissan announced that the total cumulative production of the light passenger EV “eK Cross EV” and “Nissan Sakura” reached 100,000 units, approximately one year and ten months after production began.

The light passenger EVs “eK Cross EV” and “Nissan Sakura” were created through planning and development management by NMKV, a joint venture between Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors, with production starting in May 2022. Cumulative production reached 50,000 units about a year after production began , and reached 100,000 units about a year and 10 months after production began .

The Japan Car of the Year Executive Committee announced that the Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi ek Cross EV were awarded the 43rd 2022-2023 Japan Car of the Year.

Nissan “Sakura”

The Nissan Sakura is equipped with the same cutting-edge lithium-ion battery as the Nissan Leaf. The universal stack structure, which improves installation efficiency, ensures a spacious interior, while providing a maximum driving range of 180km (WLTC mode), which is sufficient for everyday life for approximately 80% of light and compact car owners, who drive less than 50km per day (according to Nissan research), and achieving high reliability. The electricity stored in the EV battery can also be used as household electricity by supplying it to the home via a V2L device.

This is the first time that a minicar is equipped with advanced features. In addition to adopting “ProPilot,” a driving assistance technology for single lanes on expressways , the car is also the first to be equipped with “ProPilot Parking,” which automatically controls the steering, accelerator, brakes, gear changes, and parking brake when parking. From city streets to expressways and even parking lots, the advanced technology supports driving.

The exterior design, featuring a front face and luminous emblem that evokes the next generation of Nissan , exudes a calm, mature atmosphere. The advanced, elegant, slim headlights, which are the first in a minicar to feature projector-type triple headlights , assist in safe driving even on nighttime roads. The back door is also equipped with wide LED rear combination lamps inspired by lattice patterns. The wheels feature aluminum wheels with a design inspired by mizuhiki, a traditional Japanese aesthetic.

The interior features two displays laid out horizontally: a 7-inch Advanced Drive Assist Display meter and a large 9-inch navigation screen . The display is shaped to match the driver’s line of sight, making it easy to use and see. The NissanConnect navigation system features route planning that takes charging into consideration, an SOS call function for emergencies, and Apple CarPlay wireless connectivity .

Mitsubishi “ek Cross EV”

The new eK Cross EV is a new EV model in the eK Cross series of SUV-style minicars, featuring a newly developed 20kWh drive battery. Its driving range on a single charge is 180km in WLTC mode, sufficient for everyday use, and it offers the smooth, powerful acceleration, exceptional quietness, and comfortable ride you expect from an EV. It combines the spacious, comfortable interior and ease of use of the eK Cross, a light, high-roof wagon, with the smooth, powerful driving, exceptional quietness, and comfortable ride you expect from an EV, as well as the comfort and convenience of advanced driver assistance functions and connected technology. The high-capacity drive battery is reliable even in emergencies, and can be used as a convenient power source for electrical appliances via V2L devices.

The drive battery has been slimmed down and placed under the floor, resulting in class-leading rear knee room. Front shoulder room is also among the best in its class, creating a comfortable interior space. The vehicle also boasts class-leading luggage capacity.

The car is the first Mitsubishi Motors model to adopt “My Pilot Parking,” which supports smooth parking. It also comes equipped with “My Pilot,” a single-lane driving assist function for highways. The radar cruise control system [ACC] and lane keeping assist function [LKA] reduce the burden on the driver by maintaining a safe distance between vehicles and staying near the center of the lane. (Available as a manufacturer option on “P” and “G” models) The car also features “MITSUBISHI CONNECT,” which supports a safe, secure, and comfortable car life.
