The design director reveals the beauty of light and shadow

Thierry Metroz, Design Director at DS Automobiles, explains the design intent: “For the No. 4, we adopt the vertical, extremely slim V-shaped daytime running light signature from the DS E-TENSE PERFORMANCE concept car. Inspired by our new flagship model, the No. 8, we designed a horizontal light line connecting the illuminated grille and the DS badge. This combination creates a dramatic and instantly recognizable finish.” The hood, extended by 12 mm from the previous model, subtly covers the upper part of the grille, further enhancing the impression of width. The grille is solution-dyed in black and then varnished with an ultra-durable varnish, a special technique that ensures its brilliance and beauty are permanently maintained. The new front grille with this striking light signature is standard on all models, regardless of powertrain or specification. Furthermore, the ÉTOILE version features DS MATRIX LED VISION headlamps, which combine matrix and directional lighting for superior lighting quality and an extremely refined aesthetic.

New dark-toned taillights have been adopted, and the brand emblem in the center of the rear has been replaced with the DS Automobiles logo. While positioned between the entry-level DS3 SUV (4,120mm long) and the flagship DS7 SUV (4,590mm long), its height is lower than both models, highlighting its wide, low, and dynamic coupe-SUV style. Its athletic shape and sculpted surface treatment combine elegance, tension, and powerful lines to impart a unique sense of poise and dignity. The flush door handles blend perfectly with the body side design, enhancing the purity of the design. In front of the driver is a new 10.25-inch high-resolution digital instrument cluster inspired by the graphics of the DS No. 8. Together with the DS Extended Head-Up Display, which improves visibility and quietness, it effectively provides the driver with the information they need. Significantly enlarged from the previous model’s 7-inch digital instrument cluster, it has evolved to display information more clearly. In the center of the dashboard is a second 10-inch touchscreen for operating the DS IRIS SYSTEM infotainment system, which also features an AI assistant function.

Thomas Bouveret, Head of Interior Design at DS Automobiles, said, “The interior of the No. 4 inherits the spirit cultivated in the No. 8, but has been subtly refined to create an even purer atmosphere. For example, the driver’s instrument cluster has been enlarged to 10.25 inches, improving visibility and ergonomics. Access to the controls has also been simplified, with functions concentrated on the touchscreen.” He also spoke of the attention to materials, saying, “The PALLAS version features the finest canvas/fabric combination, while the ÉTOILE version features sophisticated materials such as Criollo Brown Nappa leather and black Alcantara®, accented with light gold trim.”

No. 4 E-TENSE: a 100% electric vehicle with uncompromising performance

The remarkable No. 4 E-TENSE represents a new milestone in DS Automobiles’ energy transition. Its high-performance electric motor delivers 213 hp and 343 Nm of torque, combined with a 58.3 kWh net capacity battery incorporating nickel-rich chemistry, delivers a WLTP combined range of 450 km. A new heat pump architecture and increased cooling and heating components improve efficiency and optimize thermal comfort. Three deceleration modes (D: low energy regeneration, B: medium energy regeneration, B+: high energy regeneration) can be selected via paddles behind the steering wheel. Special aerodynamic refinements include a 10 mm lower ground clearance and nearly invisible aerodynamic elements in the grille, reducing drag and maximizing energy efficiency. For charging, an 11 kW onboard charger is standard, supporting DC fast charging up to 120 kW. At a fast charging point, the battery can be charged from 20% to 80% in around 30 minutes, and a driving range of 100km can be restored in around 11 minutes.

No. 4 Plug-in Hybrid: A new generation PHEV with significantly extended range

The No. 4 Plug-in Hybrid model has also undergone an evolution. It combines a 180-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four-cylinder gasoline engine with a 125-horsepower electric motor, delivering a total system output of 225 horsepower and maximum torque of 360 Nm. The transmission is a newly developed eDCT7 (7-speed dual-clutch transmission) designed to optimize fuel economy and performance. This allows for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.1 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than the previous generation model. The traction battery capacity has been increased from 12.4 kWh to 14.6 kWh, resulting in a 30% increase in all-electric range from 56 km to a maximum of 81 km (WLTP combined cycle). A 3.7 kW on-board charger is standard, with a 7.4 kW version available as an option for faster charging.

No. 4 HYBRID: MHEV combines high levels of efficiency and dynamism

The mild-hybrid No. 4 Hybrid combines a 1.2-liter inline three-cylinder gasoline engine with a maximum output of 145 PS and a 21 kW (28 PS) electric motor, directly integrated into a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This optimized hybrid architecture enables the vehicle to run on electric power alone for up to 50% of its time in urban driving, recovering energy during deceleration and braking to power the battery. Maximum torque of 230 Nm ensures first-rate performance while reducing CO₂ emissions (from 116 g/km), making the No. 4 Hybrid a benchmark in efficiency. Fuel economy for this MHEV model is expected to be approximately 19.0 km/L (WLTP), an improvement over the previous 1.2-liter gasoline model (17.7 km/L).

EMP2 Platform and DS Active Scan Suspension: For the Ultimate Flat Ride

The DS No. 4’s exceptional driving performance and comfort are the result of its design based on the EMP2 modular platform. This cutting-edge architecture incorporates advanced technical solutions, such as welded joints with approximately 34 meters of adhesive beads and multiple welding points, ensuring superior rigidity, precision, and structural efficiency. The suspension and steering systems, the epitome of DS Automobiles’ engineering excellence, were specifically developed to deliver an exceptional balance between unparalleled handling and comfort. Furthermore, the DS No. 4’s suspension is equipped with the brand’s advanced DS Active Scan Suspension technology. A multi-purpose camera mounted above the windshield constantly scans the road surface up to 25 meters ahead at high speed, detecting irregularities of 10 mm or more. By optimally adjusting the damping of each wheel in real time, the car achieves the ultimate in flatness, almost like gliding over the road surface.

DS DRIVE ASSIST 2.0: Advanced driving assistance system that provides peace of mind and comfort

The car’s safety features are also state-of-the-art and comprehensive. DS No. 4 is equipped with DS DRIVE ASSIST 2.0, a Level 2 semi-autonomous driving experience that perfectly meets the driver’s expectations. This includes semi-autonomous lane changes, overtaking assistance, and speed recommendations based on road signs. A group of sensors that record all events inside and outside the car supports smooth and comfortable driving. DS MATRIX LED VISION and DS Extended Head-Up Display: a revolution in visibility and safety

The DS MATRIX LED VISION headlamps, which enhance nighttime visibility, are comprised of three LED modules. They automatically select from five preset modes—urban, suburban, highway, bad weather, and fog—according to traffic conditions, steering wheel angle, speed, and weather. High beams are always on without dazzling other road users, boasting a range of approximately 300 meters. The car also features the cutting-edge DS Extended Head-Up Display, which optimizes the driving experience by projecting essential driving information directly into the driver’s field of vision. Advanced optical effects make the data appear to float on a 21-inch diagonal screen four meters in front of the windshield. This visual immersion, a first step toward augmented reality (AR), allows drivers to view speed, driver assistance functions, navigation, warning messages, and multimedia information without taking their eyes off the road. In addition to these advanced features, the car is equipped with numerous cutting-edge safety features, including 360° Vision, which allows drivers to see the surroundings of the vehicle, Blind Spot Monitor (Long Range), Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Post-Collision Safety Brake. Collision safety features include far-side airbags that protect front seat occupants from the head to the side in the event of a side collision, and an active bonnet that instantly lifts the rear end of the bonnet when it detects a collision with a pedestrian, expanding the space between the hood and the top of the engine and reducing the impact on the pedestrian.

Connected services: ChatGPT-linked DS IRIS SYSTEM and EV-specific functions

Connected services are also a major attraction of the DS No. 4. The DS IRIS SYSTEM infotainment system employs SoundHound artificial intelligence powered by ChatGPT API, a technology that DS Automobiles will be the first to offer as standard equipment on all models worldwide from March 2024. In countries where voice recognition is standard, simply saying “OK IRIS” will initiate a seamless, natural conversation with the car, turning it into a true travel companion. The No. 4 comes with the CONNECT ONE PACK, which provides a variety of connected services for 10 years, including DS Digital Service Records, e-coaching functions, and regular remote updates. Additionally, the CONNECT PLUS PACK, valid for three years depending on equipment, offers additional features for the ultimate connected driving experience, including connected navigation, voice recognition with ChatGPT, e-remote control via the MyDS app, remote locking/unlocking, connected alarms, and e-routes. The No. 4 E-TENSE, in particular, includes a suite of special connected services from the start, designed to improve the user experience and simplify vehicle charging and maintenance. On-board EV routing, included as standard for the first three years through the Connect Plus pack in connected navigation, plans optimal charging stops on long-distance routes. The e-Routes app, available via the MyDS app, calculates the total journey time before departure and evaluates data in real time during the journey, proposing alternative routes if necessary. The battery preconditioning function optimizes charging times in cold climates by preheating the battery before stopping at a charging point. The e-Remote function controls the battery’s state of charge and interior temperature, as well as the “80% charge stop” function (when charging via AC) to protect the battery cell’s lifespan. Furthermore, the No. 4 features V2L (Vehicle to Load) functionality, allowing it to supply energy from an external power source via a special adapter.

Spacious interior and high-quality seats

Storage space is also generous. A 2.67m wheelbase and 1.87m mirror fold offer ample interior space and ample storage, and passengers in both rows enjoy ample elbow and legroom, as well as comfortable headroom. Leather-trimmed front seats with heating, cooling and massage functions offer exclusive comfort. The high-density foam seats are enveloping and spacious, providing excellent support and exceptional comfort.

Class-leading trunk capacity and convenience

Boot capacity is among the best in its class, with 430 litres in the petrol MHEV model, 360 litres in the plug-in hybrid model and 390 litres in the new all-electric No. 4 E-TENSE. By folding down the rear seats, this can be expanded to a maximum of 1240 litres in the MHEV model. The “PALLAS” specification offers a sophisticated interior with Diamond Tungsten fabric and stitched DS Black canvas seats. The dashboard and door panels feature tortoiseshell Basalt Black trim and Berem Bronze inserts. Standard equipment includes dual-zone automatic climate control, LED headlights, full LED rear lights, heated folding door mirrors, a Safety Pack with cruise control and adaptive speed limiter, camera- and radar-controlled autonomous emergency braking, front and rear parking assist with reversing camera, acoustic laminated front side windows, and wireless mirror screens via Wi-Fi. Optional packs include the Comfort Pack (power driver’s seat, heated front seats, soundproofing and tinted rear glass, and a power tailgate) and the Technology Pack (keyless entry and start, DS IRIS System, and wireless smartphone charging).

ÉTOILE: dynamism and ultimate refinement

Meanwhile, the higher-spec “ÉTOILE” trim features new stitching on the Alcantara® and Basalt woven seats for a more dynamic and sophisticated feel. The Alcantara® dashboard and door panels feature Beren Bronze accents. The ÉTOILE version offers a wider range of options, including the “Total Comfort Pack” (massage and heated seats, heated steering wheel, power tailgate with hands-free access, sunroof, FOCAL Electra® audio system, DS Extended Head-Up Display) and the “Total Techno Pack” (DS Drive Assist 2.0, 360° Panoramic Vision, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, alarm, DS Extended Head-Up Display). Both versions are available in five exterior colors: Pearl White, Crystal Pearl, Perla Nera Black, Night Flight, and the No. 4-exclusive Cashmere color. Two 19-inch wheels have been specially developed for the new E-TENSE version: “Lausanne” (standard on the PALLAS) and “Zurich” (optional on the PALLAS, standard on the ÉTOILE).

Pricing Strategy and Market Expectations

The price of the new DS No. 4 is expected to rise slightly from the previous model due to the adoption of the latest equipment, but by replacing the diesel engine that was previously the entry model with a gasoline mild hybrid model, the starting price may be strategically kept low. For reference, the price range of the DS4 before the minor change was 5.43 million yen for the 1.5L diesel model and 6.672 million yen for the 1.6L PHEV model.
