What to do if you vomit in your car?

If someone vomits in your car, the most important thing is to deal with it as soon as possible. If you delay dealing with it, the smell may become ingrained and become difficult to remove even if you clean, so be sure to stop the car immediately and wipe up the vomit. At the same time, it is important to ensure adequate ventilation.

Wear a mask and gloves

If someone vomits in the car, it may be due to viral gastroenteritis, so be sure to take proper infection control measures before working.

Remove vomit from the car using tissue paper or similar.

Generally speaking, the easiest way to remove vomit is with tissue paper.

Wipe further with disinfectant wipes or wet tissues

Tissue paper cannot remove fine particles, so I use tissue paper to remove them thoroughly.

Spray disinfectant and deodorizing spray

Applying a deodorizing spray may help to improve the smell a little.

Caution: I thought spraying Febreze was improving the situation, but the next day when I got in the car I could smell vomit and got drunk while driving.

I was vomited on the genuine leather seat of my Toyota Harrier, which has perforated leather seats, and the vomit got stuck in the small holes, and I couldn’t remove it with wet wipes.

Cleaning tips and how to avoid leaving odors

Using baking soda

Baking soda is alkaline, and vomit is acidic, so neutralizing it may be possible to eliminate the vomit and its distinctive odor.

Make baking soda water and sprinkle it

Here’s how to make baking soda water:

  1. Add 2-3 teaspoons of baking soda to 100ml of water
  2. Dissolve well and pour into a spray bottle

Here are the steps to clean with baking soda water:

  1. Remove any remaining vomit with a baking soda rag
  2. Wipe the seat with a rag soaked in baking soda water.
  3. Wipe dry with a dry cloth
  4. Once the smell has disappeared, open the windows and let it dry for at least half a day.
  5. If the smell persists, clean again.

Using baking soda water significantly reduced the odor from the seats, but the car I was using had perforated leather seats, and the vomit got stuck in the small holes, so I couldn’t completely clean them.

Fabric rinser cleaner

Using a rinser cleaner can thoroughly remove vomit from perforated leather seats and eliminate the odor, so we highly recommend it.

I purchased the Iris Ohyama “RNSK-P10.” If it’s difficult to get a power source, the cordless “RNS-B400D” might be a good option.

Instead of water, I used the baking soda water I created above in the rinser cleaner. I dissolved the baking soda in hot water at about 50 degrees Celsius.

Pour the baking soda water from the rinser cleaner onto the seat and let it sit for a while. Then, use the rinser cleaner to absorb the vomit along with the baking soda water. Pressing the rinser firmly against the seat, the stains and baking soda water were absorbed cleanly. The same process was performed on the seat belt, and the odor was also removed.

The previous model is the “RNS-P10-W”, but this one is cheaper.

The “RNSK-P10” is an improved model with a longer cord.

  • The power cord is now about 5m long
  • The effective capacity of the recovery tank has been reduced to approximately 0.4L.
  • The fresh water tank capacity has increased to approximately 1.1L.

If you are in a parking lot and don’t have access to a power source, you might want to consider the cordless “RNS-B400D.” The cordless model has less suction power and only lasts about 10 minutes, so I wouldn’t recommend it.

The rinse cleaner really helped me to get sharper. I hope this helps.
