On February 6, 2024, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA) and the All Japan Light Motor Vehicle Association (AJMCA) announced preliminary figures for passenger car sales by model name and new light four-wheel vehicle sales by common name for January 2024. The top-ranked light vehicle was the N-BOX, with 17,446 units sold.
Passenger car ranking
Among passenger cars, Toyota’s Corolla took the top spot with 12,484 units sold. In second place was the Toyota Yaris with 12,056 units, and in third place was the Toyota Sienta with 9,810 units sold. The top two cars sold over 10,000 units. Toyota dominated the top ten with seven vehicles. It’s interesting to note that no other manufacturers made the list, with two being Nissan and one being Honda. The Roomy, which was in fourth place until December 2023, when sales were suspended due to Daihatsu’s fraud scandal , and the Raize, which was in tenth place, are no longer in the rankings.

In the minicar category, the Honda N-BOX took the top spot with 17,446 units sold. In second place was the Suzuki Spacia with 11,316 units sold, and in third place was the Suzuki Hustler with 8,211 units sold . The Tanto, a regular in the minicar rankings but which held second place until December 2023 when sales were suspended due to Daihatsu’s fraud scandal , has dropped to eighth place, while the Mira, which was in sixth place, the Taft, which came in seventh, and the Move, which came in eighth, are no longer in the rankings.
