Toyota New GR Corolla Partially Improved 2026 Model Exterior

The newly announced 2026 model will be improved to further heights, building on the accumulated progress made so far. The camouflaged prototype images released by Toyota clearly show this intention. The most eye-catching feature is the bold change to the exterior design.

The rear section in particular is fitted with a rear wing that is clearly larger than the previous model, which is expected to contribute to increased downforce at high speeds. This can be said to be a change that is strongly focused on improving the limit performance on the circuit. In the front section, a newly shaped air duct has been added to the engine hood, and air outlets have also been added to the rear of the front fenders. These aero parts promote the discharge of hot air from the engine bay and improve cooling efficiency, while also rectifying the air flow on the body sides, thereby improving overall aerodynamic performance.

These changes hint at the arrival of a more radical “GRMN” (GAZOO Racing Masters of Nürburgring) version, which was inferred from development vehicles spy shots last year. It’s unclear at this point whether these upgrades will be limited to specific high-performance grades or applied to the entire GR Corolla lineup. Whatever the case, the 2026 GR Corolla will undoubtedly feature a more aggressive and functional exterior.

While the GR Corolla maintains its distinctive wide and low stance (length 4410mm x width 1850mm x height 1480mm, wheelbase 2640mm), its interior has undergone steady evolution. Compared to the base Corolla Sport (length 4375mm x width 1790mm x height 1460mm), this wide body features 20mm wider front fenders and 30mm wider rear fenders, and a 60mm wider front tread and 85mm wider rear tread, greatly contributing to stability during high-speed cornering. While the GR Yaris (length 3995mm x width 1805mm x height 1460mm) employs a three-door design to pursue weight reduction and driving performance, the GR Corolla maintains a five-door body, without sacrificing everyday usability, which is another attractive feature.

Toyota’s new GR Corolla (partially improved 2026 model) powertrain

Along with the exterior evolution, the further strengthening of the powertrain is also noteworthy. Toyota has stated that the 2026 model will feature “improved torque and unique tuning.” While specific figures have not yet been released, maximum torque, which was increased to 40.8 kgm in the February 2025 improvement, will be further increased. While maximum output has not been mentioned, it is possible that the current 304 horsepower will be maintained. The increased torque directly translates into improved acceleration response, especially from low to mid-speed ranges, and power exiting corners, which will significantly contribute to improved drivability on winding roads and circuits. It is expected that engine control and transmission settings (6-speed manual and 8-speed GR-DAT) will also be optimized to match this increased torque.

In addition, chassis tuning will also be revised. To make the most of the stronger powertrain and improved aerodynamic performance, the balance of the suspension, steering system, and body rigidity will be optimized to a higher level. The GR Corolla originally used MacPherson struts in the front and double wishbone suspension in the rear, with pillow ball bushings and optimized springs, shock absorbers, and alignment. For the 2026 model, these elements will be further refined, resulting in sharper, more responsive handling and improved control at the limit.

Toyota New GR Corolla Partially Improved 2026 Model Interior

As for the interior, the current model’s highly refined cockpit is expected to remain. A 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel faces the driver, displaying a wide range of information, including engine speed, boost pressure, gear position, and the currently selected drive mode. The center console features a short-stroke shift lever and a manual parking brake for enhanced vehicle control during drifting and other driving situations. The infotainment system features an 8-inch display audio with cloud connectivity and voice control, providing a full range of connected features. Special sports seats with excellent support, a comfortable leather steering wheel, and aluminum pedals with excellent feel enhance the driver’s sense of unity with the car. The GR Gunmetal finish, which reduces reflections on the instrument panel and was introduced in the February 2025 update, is likely to continue to be available.

Toyota’s new GR Corolla (partially improved 2026 model) safety features

Safety performance is also top-notch. Toyota’s latest preventive safety package, Toyota Safety Sense, comes standard. This includes Pre-Collision Safety, which detects pedestrians (day and night) and cyclists (daytime), Lane Departure Alert, which has a lane departure warning and steering assist function, and Lane Tracing Assist, which helps keep the vehicle centered in its lane. Other features include radar cruise control with full-speed tracking, automatic high beams that automatically switch between high and low beams, and Road Sign Assist, which recognizes road signs and displays them in the dashboard. Other features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and hill start assist control, providing a wide range of driver support, from everyday driving to sports driving.

Toyota Gazoo Racing engineers are currently working on the final fine-tuning of the 2026 GR Corolla, and the final results will be confirmed after a final test drive by Toyota master driver Akio Toyoda. This is an important process in the development of GR brand models, and is a testament to Toyota’s passion for this car.

Toyota GR Corolla (partially improved) 2026 model price

The current GR Corolla RZ is priced at ¥5.68 million for the 6-speed manual transmission and ¥5.98 million for the 8-speed automatic transmission (both prices include consumption tax). An optional “SPORT Package” is available for ¥253,000, which includes an intercooler with cooling spray function, matte black BBS forged aluminum wheels, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. This latest upgrade is expected to bring a slight price increase due to further performance improvements. Considering that the February 2025 upgrade saw a price increase of approximately ¥430,000 (for the manual transmission), it’s likely that the price will be revised by around ¥150,000 this time around. However, given the level of advancements, there’s no doubt that the car will offer appeal and value that more than makes up for the price increase.

About the partially improved evolved GR Corolla

Orders will begin being accepted in Japan on February 4, 2025, with prices ranging from 5.68 million yen to 5.98 million yen. This announcement marks the resumption of sales. Toyota America’s Toyota GAZOO Racing unveiled the evolved GR Corolla for the first time in the world on August 1, 2024, in California, USA . Here’s a detailed look at what kind of model it will be.

Evolved GR Corolla partial improvement 1.6L turbo engine improved

The 1.6L inline 3-cylinder intercooled turbo engine “G16E-GTS” has a maximum output of 224kw (304PS) and a maximum torque of 400N・m (40.8kgf/m) increased from 370N・m (37.7kgf/m).

The evolved GR Corolla undergoes partial improvements and adopts the newly developed 8-speed automatic transmission “GR-DAT.”

2024 Toyota GR Yaris

Newly developed 8-speed automatic transmission “GR-DAT”

The GR-DAT has been honed in motorsports and on a variety of roads. The AT control software has been optimized for sports driving. While previously gear changes were determined by sensing vehicle behavior such as deceleration G and speed, the new system meticulously senses brake application/release and accelerator operation, anticipating situations where gear changes are necessary before vehicle behavior changes occur, achieving “gear selection that captures the driver’s intentions.” Gear selection is similar to that achieved by professional drivers. High-heat-resistant friction material is used for the gear-change clutch inside the AT, and improvements to the AT control software have achieved world-class gear change speeds. The 8-speed AT and close ratios make the most of the power band. A Torsen® Limited Slip Differential ( LSD ) is installed to improve drive force control performance through accelerator operation.

Evolution of cornering performance

2025 Toyota GR Corolla

The new GR Corolla incorporates rebound springs in the front and rear shock absorbers, improving vehicle posture during cornering and the ground load characteristics of the inner wheels, thereby enhancing stability. Furthermore, the trailing arm mounting point on the rear axle has been raised to reduce rear sag during acceleration. This reduces changes in vehicle posture in response to accelerator operation, enabling stable cornering. Additionally, the spring characteristics of the rear coil spring and stabilizer have been optimized to improve rear tire contact with the road, enhancing vehicle controllability.

Evolution of cooling and aerodynamic performance

Vehicles equipped with the GR-DAT come standard with a water-cooled ATF warmer and cooler or an air-cooled ATF cooler, and are also equipped with a sub-radiator. This enhances engine and transmission cooling performance. The front bumper is designed to smooth airflow, maximizing cooling effectiveness and ensuring driving stability.

An evolution in the sense of oneness with the car

High-rigidity grooved washer bolts are used to fasten the steering column and instrument panel reinforcement, achieving straight-line stability and a direct steering feel.In addition, special high-rigidity bolts are used for the fastening bolts of chassis parts, improving steering response and rear grip.

These improvements make the new GR Corolla a vehicle that offers a higher level of performance and driving enjoyment.

About the new Toyota GR Corolla

Compared to the Corolla Sport, the GR Corolla’s front fenders are 20mm wider on each side and the rear fenders are 30mm wider on each side, giving it a wider stance and suggesting a wilder driving experience.

The GR Corolla is equipped with an even more powerful version of the 1.6L inline 3-cylinder intercooled turbo engine also found in the GR Yaris, with a maximum output of 224kW (304PS). It also features an optimized GR-FOUR sports 4WD system with a front and rear variable drive force system, achieving high-speed stability and excellent cornering performance. While using the Corolla Sport’s body as its basic structure, this allows for a 60mm wider front and 85mm wider rear tread.

Furthermore, while maintaining the convenience of a five-door, five-seater vehicle, it also offers a high level of both ease of use in everyday life and driving pleasure. Like the GR Yaris, it uses a roof panel made of CFRP material formed using the SMC method, which allows for a high degree of freedom in shape, achieving not only increased rigidity but also weight reduction. It is also equipped with opposed caliper brakes that provide stable braking force and controllability.

The short-stroke shift lever is positioned so that the arm is naturally lowered from the steering wheel, allowing for quick shifting. The parking brake is manually operated , with a view to vehicle control at the limit, such as during drifting . A full TFT meter (12.3-inch digital instrument cluster) developed exclusively for GR vehicles has been newly adopted . Modeled after racing cars, the feedback of professional drivers has been incorporated to improve visibility during sporty driving. The latest preventive safety package, Toyota Safety Sense, is standard equipment.

The 2023 partial improvement has been made further by utilizing the experience gained from various motorsports such as the Super Taikyu Series. This has resulted in an improved sense of directness and stability in response to driving operations, further evolving the car’s ability to drive in a way that is more responsive to the driver’s wishes.

To improve the direct feeling of driving operations, bolts with increased fastening rigidity have been adopted for some of the bolts fastening chassis parts. This has improved responsiveness to steering operations and straight-line stability, further evolving the sense of unity with the car.

To improve stability, the shape of the front bumper duct has been improved to optimize the airflow inside the wheelhouse, resulting in improved handling stability and stable driving even at high speeds.

In addition, a new limited edition color, Cyan Metallic, will be available, combined with the exclusive interior color Black x Blue, and will be sold in a limited run of 50 units. This limited edition model is a special one that combines unique design and high performance.
