Powertrain and Driving Dynamics
Engine specs (unchanged)
The 2026 Pilot is equipped with the same reliable powertrain as before.
- Engine : 3.5L V6 DOHC naturally aspirated
- Maximum power output : 285hp (212kW / 289PS) @ 6,100rpm
- Maximum torque : 262 lb-ft (355 Nm) @ 5,000 rpm

Honda i-VTM4 four-wheel drive system
The award-winning Honda i-VTM4 four-wheel drive system is available across all trim levels and is standard on Trail Sport, Touring, Elite and Black Edition.
This torque-vectoring AWD system not only distributes torque between the front and rear axles, but also between the left and right rear wheels , allowing up to 70% of engine torque to be sent to the rear axle and 100% of that torque to be distributed to either rear wheel.
When cornering, more torque is distributed to the outside rear wheel, generating a yaw moment for more precise cornering, reduced understeer and improved maneuverability.
Five driving modes
All grades come standard with five driving modes:
- Normal : Ideal for everyday driving
- ECON : Fuel efficiency-focused mode
- Snow : Improved stability on snowy roads
- Sport : dynamic driving performance
- Tow : Optimized for trailer towing
AWD models from EX-L onwards also add Sand and Trail modes for optimized off-road performance, and a Hill Descent Control system is standard on all trim levels.
Improved steering feel
For the 2026 model year, the electric power steering (EPS) system has been retuned.
- Improved steering feel and precision : Achieved in all driving modes
- Smooth, natural and direct : supporting confidence and safety on winding roads
- Increased on-center weight : Provides stability and a relaxed driving experience on the highway, reducing driver input
True off-road performance for trail sports
The Pilot TrailSport is an SUV with serious off-road capability for family adventures.
- Dedicated Rugged Hardware
- Heavy-duty steel skid plate : Protects underneath
- Lifted, off-road tuned suspension : increased ground clearance, improved articulation, and improved off-road ride comfort
- All-terrain tires : Significantly improved traction on mud, sand, rocks and snow
- Maintaining on-road comfort : without sacrificing best-in-class handling.
Safety Equipment: Evolution of Honda Sensing®
The 2026 Pilot boasts cutting-edge safety features in the midsize SUV class.

- Honda Sensing® : The latest suite of safety and driver assistance technologies
- Advanced Collision Safety Body Structure (ACE™) : Honda’s unique, highly compatible design
- Advanced airbag technology : Supports the head for improved protection
New: Post-Collision Braking System (PCB)
New for all 2026 models is the Post-Collision Braking System (PCB), which is designed to reduce damage and injuries in secondary collisions after the initial collision.

Hybrid models? Future prospects
Many consumers are looking forward to a hybrid powertrain, but unfortunately it won’t be available in the 2026 Pilot.
Honda has confirmed the development of a new hybrid V6 engine for the North American market, but this updated Pilot will remain a non-electric model only.
The current 3.5L V6 engine is reliable and produces a decent 285 horsepower, but its fuel economy lags behind rivals like the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, Kia Telluride Hybrid, and Hyundai Palisade Hybrid.
- City fuel economy : Approximately 19 mpg (approximately 8.1 km/L)
- Highway fuel economy : Approximately 25 mpg (approximately 10.6 km/L)
As YouTube reviewer Kirk Kreifels points out in his video, “The Achilles heel of the Pilot and all of Honda’s large platform vehicles is fuel economy,” so hybridization is highly anticipated. Realistically, it’s expected that the installation of a large platform hybrid powertrain will be two to three years away.
Sales trends and market position
Pilot sales for 2024 (up to October) were approximately 104,000 units, down approximately 9% from 115,000 units in the same period last year. In particular, sales for October 2024 alone were approximately 9,800 units, down nearly 18% from approximately 12,000 units in the same month last year.
On the other hand, sales of the Passport , a two-row SUV, increased by more than 2,000 units, and Honda appears to be satisfied with this sales balance. The Passport is gaining popularity due to its more stylish appearance and the ease of use of its two-row seats.
The Pilot continues to play a vital role as a practical three-row SUV for families who want to avoid the Odyssey minivan.
Comparison with competing models
Main competing models
- Toyota Highlander/Grand Highlander : Hybrid model available, high fuel efficiency
- Kia Telluride : Design and price competitiveness
- Hyundai Palisade : Luxury-oriented, hybrid option added
- Volkswagen Atlas : A European-inspired option
- Mazda CX-90 : Premium-oriented, straight-six engine
The Pilot’s strengths are Honda reliability , excellent handling , a wealth of standard equipment , and a Trail Sport configuration with serious off-road capability .
Summary: The definitive family SUV that continues to evolve
The 2026 Honda Pilot is a mid-life model of the current generation and has undergone a wide range of improvements.
Main evolution points
✅More powerful and sophisticated exterior design
✅Significantly enlarged digital display (37% increase)
✅Significantly improved quietness (2-3dB noise reduction)
✅Improved steering feel
✅Comprehensive standard equipment (power tailgate on all grades, etc.)
✅Advanced safety equipment (post-collision braking added)
✅Attractive new colors added
Future expectations
❌ No hybrid powertrain (expect one in 2-3 years)
⚠️ Trail Sport does not have seat ventilation
⚠️ Fuel economy is inferior to competing hybrid models
The 2026 Pilot remains an attractive choice for families who need three rows of seating and prioritize reliability and performance. The Trail Sport trim, in particular, offers a unique combination of on-road comfort and off-road capability.
While the delay in hybridization is unfortunate, the current 3.5L V6 engine provides ample power and reliability, and combined with its high-quality construction in Alabama, it will continue to meet the needs of American families.
The evolved 2026 Honda Pilot is expected to go on sale in December 2025. Further details will be released as the launch date approaches.
