New RAV4 full model change exterior

The exterior design of the new RAV4 inherits the powerful look of the current model while evolving into a more modern, sophisticated, urban style. It features a distinctive front face that adopts Toyota’s latest design language, “Hammerhead,” and features sharp headlights, a large front grille, and a three-dimensional bumper, creating a front mask that exudes presence and boldness.

The new RAV4 is available in three styles: the urban “CORE” with a sophisticated design; the outdoor “ADVENTURE” that emphasizes a rugged feel that further stimulates the sense of adventure; and the sporty “GR SPORT” that expresses the fun of driving along with functionality.

[RAV4 CORE] Refined and innovative, it stands out in the city

RAV4 CORE

The RAV4 CORE, sporting a sophisticated, urban design, is based on the new “SUV Hammerhead” design and features a front grille with a detailed honeycomb mesh pattern and narrow resin fenders that give the vehicle a sleek, relaxed appearance. The low, urban-style roof rails create a clean, modern atmosphere reminiscent of an advanced electric vehicle. A newly designed Toyota logo proudly appears near the tip of the hood. The CORE model is available with both a highly efficient hybrid (HEV) and a powerful, environmentally friendly plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, making it a central model in the new RAV4 lineup and designed to meet the diverse needs of a wide range of customers.

[RAV4 ADVENTURE] Inspires the spirit of adventure with unwavering toughness

RAV4 ADVENTURE

Meanwhile, the RAV4 ADVENTURE is a model that has further developed and strongly inherited the tough and powerful off-road image that the current (older) RAV4 has built. Wider and more imposing plastic overfenders and protectors, ruggedly designed exclusive aluminum wheels, and large, robust and practical roof rails are all prominent design elements that symbolize the adventurous spirit. For existing users who have been familiar with the RAV4 brand up until now, this is the model that will be most familiar to them, and will allow them to sense a definite evolution.

[RAV4 GR SPORT] A passionate sports grade that embodies the soul of driving

The RAV4 GR SPORT, which is part of the PHEV-only lineup, is, as its name suggests, specially designed for users who pursue sporty driving and aggressive styling. The front mask features the functional and masculine Functional Matrix Grille, a symbol of the GR brand, and gloss black accent parts are effectively placed on the bumper, side sills, rear bumper, etc.

In addition, the car is fitted with specially designed sporty aero parts (front spoiler, rear spoiler, etc.), which make the body look lower and wider, powerfully expressing its outstanding performance visually.

A feast of light created by advanced technology: headlights common to all models and a distinctive rear view

The headlight design is common to all three models, with the main headlamp unit cleverly positioned between the thin LED daytime running lamps and LED turn signals, a new approach that sets it apart from previous Toyota models. This further enhances the impression of a sharp and advanced front mask. The rear design also reflects the individuality of each model, with taillight graphics and bumper shapes showing different expressions, clearly asserting the unique character of each model even from behind.

Body size and robust platform: refined basic performance

The body dimensions have been announced as follows: length from 4,600mm to 4,645mm, width from 1,855mm to 1,880mm, height from 1,680mm to 1,685mm, and a wheelbase of 2,690mm for all models. The ADVENTURE and GR SPORT models, in particular, have a width of 1,880mm, so caution is required when using parking spaces in urban areas due to pallet width restrictions. The vehicle’s basic structure employs a newly developed platform that further evolves the TNGA platform concept, achieving a high level of balance between dramatically improved body rigidity, a lower center of gravity, and reduced weight. The use of high-tensile steel plates in the right places, an expanded application area for structural adhesives, and the adoption of cutting-edge welding techniques such as laser screw welding (LSW) have resulted in a robust yet flexible body structure. This contributes significantly to excellent handling stability, a comfortable ride, and improved collision safety performance.

Basic design elements common to the new RAV4 interior include a newly designed steering wheel that is easy to grip and gives a sporty impression, a horizontal instrument panel that visually creates a sense of spaciousness and stability in the interior, and a wide, prominent center console that gives occupants a sense of strength and security befitting an SUV.

The interior concept common to the new RAV4: a space that exudes strength and sophistication

Basic design elements common to the new RAV4’s interior include a newly designed steering wheel that is easy to grip and gives a sporty impression, a horizontal instrument panel that visually creates a sense of spaciousness and stability in the interior space, and a thick, imposing center console that gives occupants a sense of strength and security typical of an SUV.

[RAV4 CORE] A sophisticated cockpit that pursues quality and functionality

The interior of the RAV4 CORE model is based on a basic design without any pretense, but with attention to detail and texture, it offers a high-quality space that combines calm and refinement, likely to appeal to a wide range of users. The instrument panel features a powerful horizontal design, and the adoption of large LCD monitors (12.3 inches for the driver’s instrument cluster and 12.9 inches for the center display) significantly advances the digitalization of controls and information displays, creating a strong impression of advanced technology and a futuristic feel. The steering wheel design has been redesigned with a sharper, more angular center pad, enhancing its sporty impression. The dashboard and door trim skillfully combine soft padding materials with pleasant tactile feel, decorative metal accents, and a convenient tray for storing small items, achieving a perfect balance between functionality and design. The air conditioning vents and various switches feature a tough, functional design befitting an SUV, and the switches on both sides of the instrument panel in particular are arranged with a mechanical feel reminiscent of an aircraft cockpit.

The drive mode selector offers four modes: Normal, Eco, Sport, and Custom, allowing users to save their preferred settings. The color and display content of the meter display change depending on the selected mode, visually enhancing the driving experience. Other features include an EV mode switch (PHEV and HEV), two wireless charging trays for simply placing a smartphone or other device on the tray for charging, and seat ventilation (front seats) for comfort in hot weather. Beneath the tray at the bottom of the instrument panel are two USB Type-C ports supporting up to 45W of high output, highlighting thoughtful considerations for compatibility with modern digital devices and enhanced passenger comfort. The center console box features a double-door design for easy access from both the driver and passenger, enhancing everyday convenience. The seat upholstery is made of high-quality fabric or synthetic leather, and some grades feature a two-tone design, as well as intricate stitching and perforations (air vents) on the headrests and center of the seats, creating a high-quality atmosphere. The center of the seats in particular uses ultra suede material, which combines a luxurious feel with excellent tactile sensation, providing passengers with a comfortable feel.

[RAV4 ADVENTURE] An active space that combines playfulness and toughness

The interior of the RAV4 ADVENTURE model echoes the rugged image of the exterior, with bright orange accent stitching and decorations on the seats, dashboard, door trim, etc., creating an active and playful space. Taking outdoor use into consideration, the seat upholstery is made of a highly durable material that is resistant to dirt and easy to wipe clean, making the design both practical and appealing.

[RAV4 GR SPORT] A passionate space that will inspire your sporty spirit

The interior of the RAV4 GR SPORT model reflects the sporty appearance of the exterior in the cabin space, with designs throughout that stimulate the driver’s sporty mindset. The specially designed sports seats feature passionate red stitching and an embroidered GR logo, and the steering wheel and shift knob also feature red stitching and GR-exclusive decoration, fully expressing the world view unique to the GR brand inside the vehicle, creating a space that further enhances the sporty driving experience.

Enhanced rear seat comfort: hospitality for all passengers

While the rear seat interior dimensions remain largely unchanged compared to the previous model, the optimized seat shape provides a relatively spacious and comfortable seating experience, with even an adult male having more than two fists of space in front of their knees. The rear seats are also equipped with heated seats (both left and right), which are useful in cold weather, and USB Type-C ports for charging passengers’ smartphones, further improving rear passenger comfort. The rear seatbacks offer ample height and support, and the center seat also features a retractable armrest (with two horizontal cup holders). The rear interior lighting has also been upgraded to brighter, more energy-efficient LEDs. Furthermore, the rear seatbacks can be reclined in two positions to suit passenger preference and the amount of luggage being carried, allowing passengers to maintain a comfortable posture even on long trips. The inner door handles are designed to be easy to grip and operate, and the door linings are shaped so that the armrest wraps around, providing a convenient space to place a smartphone or other device.

A spacious and user-friendly luggage space: the perfect vehicle for an active lifestyle

In terms of luggage space usability, the new RAV4 maintains its high level of practicality and has been further improved through meticulous refinements. The basic luggage capacity has been slightly increased from the previous 733 liters to 749 liters. Furthermore, when the rear seatbacks are folded forward, there is less of a gap between the luggage compartment floor and the luggage compartment, creating a flatter and more spacious loading space, improving the loading capacity of long or bulky items.

The rear door is equipped with an electric tailgate (possibly with a hands-free function) that can be opened and closed automatically with the flip of a switch, allowing for smooth loading and unloading of luggage. The luggage compartment is also wide enough to accommodate multiple golf bags placed sideways, and the new model’s reputation for its “substantial cargo capacity” is no exaggeration. Like its predecessor, the highly efficient and user-friendly luggage space will undoubtedly continue to be a major attraction for active lifestyles, from everyday shopping trips to weekend outdoor leisure activities. The rear seatbacks are split-foldable in a standard 60:40 ratio, allowing for flexible seating arrangements to suit the number of passengers and the shape of the luggage being carried. Folding down all rear seats creates a spacious, flat space that, like the previous model, can easily accommodate large items such as road bikes.

Introducing the innovative UI “Arene”! Changing the way people interact with the new RAV4

One of the most innovative advancements in the new RAV4 is the full adoption of Toyota’s proprietary new in-vehicle infotainment and connectivity system, “Arene.” The “Arene” system has a completely redesigned user interface (UI) that is intuitive, easy to understand, and smooth to operate, similar to the smartphones and tablets we are familiar with every day. The home screen features a widget display that allows frequently used functions, such as navigation, audio, and vehicle information, to be arranged according to user preference. It also features a quick control function that allows quick access to frequently used functions, such as drive mode selection and main climate control operations, allowing users to operate each vehicle function with fewer steps and more smoothly.

Intuitive UI and seamless operability: Bringing a smart device-like experience into the car

The Aline system’s user interface (UI) has been completely redesigned to be intuitive, easy to understand, and smooth to operate, just like the smartphones and tablets we are familiar with every day. The home screen features a widget display that allows frequently used functions, such as navigation, audio, and vehicle information, to be arranged according to user preference. It also features a quick control function that allows quick access to frequently used functions, such as drive mode selection and main air conditioning controls, allowing users to operate each vehicle function with fewer steps and more stress-free.

Coordinated displays and emotional presentation: optimal information for a richer driving experience

The integration between the multimedia display and the meter display has been dramatically strengthened. For example, route guidance information from the navigation system can now be displayed large and in detail on the meter display directly in front of the driver’s seat, allowing the driver to accurately grasp the information they need while minimizing eye movement, enabling safer driving. Operating the drive mode selector dynamically changes the display theme and color of the meter display depending on the selected mode (e.g., Eco, Normal, Sport, Custom, etc.), adding to the visual enjoyment of driving and incorporating functions that appeal to the driver’s emotions.

Smart vehicle configuration: personalized comfort at your fingertips

Many vehicle settings that previously required physical switches and multi-level menu operations, such as charging settings (PHEV models), various customization settings for the driver assistance system (Toyota Safety Sense), and automatic headlamp sensitivity adjustment, can now be operated graphically and intuitively on the large touchscreen of the Aline system. Users can now more seamlessly customize each vehicle function to their liking, just as if they were operating their own smart device. For the air conditioning control panel, key functions such as temperature and airflow adjustment remain as physical dials and buttons for ease of operation, while more detailed settings and mode switching can be operated on the screen, skillfully balancing advanced technology with everyday usability.

“Hey Toyota” at your command: Dramatically improved voice recognition

The new voice recognition system has also undergone dramatic advancements. Simply saying “Hey, Toyota” to the car activates the system, allowing users to set navigation destinations, make phone calls, and even control a wide range of vehicle features and functions without taking their hands off the steering wheel. This includes opening and closing the sunshade on the panoramic sunroof, operating the windshield wipers, opening and closing the power windows, and adjusting the temperature and volume of the air conditioning. Compared to the previous system, the new system not only significantly improves voice command recognition accuracy, but also dramatically reduces the processing time it takes for the system to understand and respond to a command. For example, the previous system required approximately 3.5 seconds, but the new system now completes the process in just one second, providing a stress-free experience. Furthermore, this improved voice recognition system also takes safety into consideration, identifying the speaker’s location in the vehicle and, for example, only accepting commands from the driver and ignoring unintended voice commands from passengers or rear passengers.

A shift panel that combines advanced technology with functional beauty

The design around the shift panel has also been revamped to match the advanced interior atmosphere brought about by the Aline system. The shift selector has been replaced with a more compact, electronically controlled system that is easier to operate (this may vary depending on the model), and it has been functionally and beautifully placed together on the center console, along with the switches for the electric parking brake (EPB) and auto brake hold function. This minimizes eye movement and body movements while driving, and the simple, clean design is complemented by glossy piano black accents, enhancing the overall quality of the interior.

PVM revolutionizes safety confirmation: High-definition, smooth visibility support

The performance of the Panoramic View Monitor (PVM), essential for parking lot maneuvers and ensuring safety on narrow roads, has also been significantly improved thanks to the Aline system. Camera images are displayed more smoothly, and zooming in and out on the screen and panning the viewpoint horizontally are now as smooth and intuitive as using a smartphone map app. This helps drivers more accurately and quickly grasp the situation around the vehicle, making safety checks easier than ever before, especially in SUVs with many blind spots. Furthermore, the adoption of a new, high-performance CPU, which controls the processing power of the entire system, has dramatically improved the quality of images displayed on the display, providing clearer, more beautiful graphics and more sophisticated visual information. Of course, the new system also comes with a “See-Through View” function, which allows you to see the road surface and tire position through the vehicle, providing powerful support for preventing curbs and accurately pulling over in tight spaces.

OTA updates for an ever-evolving car: always enjoy the latest RAV4 experience

The greatest benefit of the Aline system, and what makes the new RAV4 a “next-generation SUV,” is its full support for over-the-air (OTA) software updates. This means that even after purchase, vehicle updates, such as performance improvements and new functions for the driver assistance features included in the Toyota Safety Sense preventive safety package, infotainment system improvements, and new applications, can be continuously provided via communication without the need to visit a dealership. The vehicle is always kept up-to-date, truly realizing a “car that continues to evolve the more it is driven.” Furthermore, in the future, more advanced uses are expected, such as analyzing various driving data and sensor information collected from the vehicle on Toyota’s servers to learn and improve the control logic of the safety driving assistance system and distributing the results to each vehicle via OTA updates. The new RAV4 has now gone beyond being simply a means of transportation; it has transformed into a new-generation mobility vehicle, like a personal assistant that grows alongside and supports each user.

New RAV4 Fully Redesigned Next-Generation Toyota Safety Sense

The new RAV4 will be equipped with the next-generation Toyota Safety Sense as standard equipment on all vehicles. This advanced safety system significantly improves the RAV4’s safety performance, ensuring the safety of the driver, passengers, and other road users.

Added features include “Low-speed acceleration suppression function,” “Detection of oncoming vehicles and pedestrians when turning right at intersections,” and “Emergency steering avoidance support function.” Adopted “Driver Abnormality Response System” and added curve speed suppression function to “Radar Cruise Control.”

“Pre-Collision Safety,” the core of Toyota Safety Sense, can now detect bicycles during the day and pedestrians at night, providing a wider range of hazard detection. Furthermore, “Lane Tracing Assist (LTA)” assists with steering to keep the vehicle in its lane when radar cruise control is activated, helping to reduce fatigue on long drives.

The latest “Collision Avoidance Assist Pre-Crash Safety” system offers further enhanced functionality. Its detection capabilities at intersections have been improved, reducing the risk of collisions with oncoming vehicles moving straight ahead or crossing pedestrians when turning right. New features have also been added, including an acceleration suppression function at low speeds and an emergency steering avoidance assist function, providing even more comprehensive safety performance.

New safety features for the RAV4 include Road Sign Assist (RSA), which reads key traffic signs and displays them on the instrument panel to improve driver situational awareness. Additionally, Automatic High Beam (AHB) helps ensure safe nighttime driving by improving visibility and protecting drivers from other vehicles.

The “Sudden Acceleration Suppression” function suppresses the car’s acceleration when it detects excessive or incorrect application of the accelerator, regardless of whether there is an obstacle or not. The Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) aims for “zero blind spots” and uses 3D imaging, making it more intuitive to use and expanding the field of view by allowing you to see through the vehicle.

These advanced safety features bring the new RAV4 one step closer to Toyota’s vision of “zero traffic fatalities and injuries,” and are expected to set a benchmark for safety in the SUV segment. The RAV4’s improved safety performance through this full model change will not only give drivers peace of mind, but will also make a significant contribution to preventing actual accidents and mitigating damage.

Advanced Safety

The Intelligent Clearance Sonar (Parking Support Brake Stationary) has been further evolved in the full model change of the new RAV4. This system, which helps mitigate collisions caused by accidentally pressing the accelerator or pressing it too hard, and contributes to reducing damage, adds a function to mitigate contact with stationary objects to the “Clearance Sonar,” which uses a display and buzzer to alert you to approaching stationary objects when parking, etc. The sonar can also accurately detect glass at convenience stores, and when detecting a stationary object in the direction of travel at low speeds (below 15 km/h), it will reduce hybrid system output and automatically apply the brakes if the distance becomes even shorter.

The emergency brake signal (hazard lamp flashing type) is a function that automatically flashes the hazard lamps when you brake suddenly. This effectively warns following vehicles of the impending sudden braking, reducing the risk of a rear-end collision.

If the driver continues to remain inactive during Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) control, the driver abnormality response system will warn the driver with sound, visual and gradual deceleration to prompt the driver to take action. Furthermore, the system will alert the outside world of the vehicle with hazard lights and a horn while slowing down and stopping the vehicle within its own lane, helping to avoid and mitigate the damage caused by accidents. This function has evolved into a more advanced driver assistance system with the full model change of the new RAV4.

The digital inner mirror is a function that displays images from a camera mounted at the rear of the vehicle on the rearview mirror. This ensures a clear rear view even when the view is obstructed by the back seat or luggage. In the new RAV4, the image quality of this digital inner mirror has been improved, and visibility at night and in bad weather has also been improved.

The Advanced Park Remote function assists with backing into a target parking position confirmed on the screen, or exiting from parallel parking, by providing on-screen instructions and voice and buzzer guidance, as well as operating the steering wheel, shift position, accelerator, and brake. A dedicated smartphone app is also available, allowing remote operation from outside the vehicle. This function has evolved into an easier-to-use, more accurate system with the full model change of the new RAV4.

New RAV4 Fully Redesigned: Dramatically Evolved Powertrain: High-Level Balance of Environmental and Driving Performance

The powertrain has undergone a dramatic evolution, aiming to achieve an unprecedented balance between environmental friendliness and driving performance. All new RAV4 models are equipped with Toyota’s latest “6th generation hybrid system,” which brings together the best of Toyota’s electrification technologies, and pure gasoline engine models will be completely eliminated from the lineup. This new hybrid system has been thoroughly downsized, low-profiled, and highly efficient in all major components, including the engine, motor, battery, and power control unit, while at the same time significantly increasing motor output.

The power of the 6th generation hybrid system: a new combination of efficiency and power

The new RAV4 is equipped with Toyota’s latest 6th generation hybrid system, which brings together the best of its electrification technologies. This new system has been thoroughly downsized, low-profiled, and highly efficient in all major components, including the engine, motor, battery, and power control unit, while at the same time significantly increasing motor output.

Amazing evolution of PHEV models: 150km EV range and overwhelming performance

Of particular note is the remarkable evolution of the plug-in hybrid (PHV) model. The total energy capacity of the onboard lithium-ion drive battery has increased to 22.7 kWh, a massive 30% increase compared to the previous model (18.1 kWh). As a result, the EV driving range from a fully charged state has been significantly increased from approximately 85 km (varies depending on measurement standards, such as JC08 mode) to a target of 150 km in WLTC mode. This means that the average user’s daily commute can be covered almost entirely in EV mode without starting the engine, significantly reducing environmental impact through zero-emission driving and running costs through a significant reduction in gasoline consumption. The efficiency of the 2.5L Dynamic Force engine has also been further improved, producing an impressive total system output of 324 hp. The E-Four model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds, demonstrating agility comparable to that of a sports car. Looking at the engine alone, power output has increased by approximately 12% compared to the previous model, while the overall height of the unit has been reduced by approximately 15% and its weight by approximately 18%, making for truly revolutionary improvements.

The HEV model’s proven capabilities: powerful and refined driving

The hybrid (HEV) model also boasts significant improvements. The front-wheel drive (FF) version boasts a total system maximum output of 229 PS, while the all-wheel drive model equipped with the electric 4WD system “E-Four,” which uses a dedicated motor to drive the rear wheels, delivers 239 PS, achieving both linear and powerful acceleration in response to accelerator operation and excellent fuel economy at a high level. With 0-100 km/h acceleration in 8.1 seconds, you will hardly feel any lack of power performance in everyday driving. The E-Four system has also been improved, with more precise front and rear wheel torque distribution control, improving starting and acceleration performance on slippery roads and stability when cornering.

Advanced technologies supporting electrification: DC fast charging, V2H, and improved quietness

Furthermore, to enhance convenience as a fully electric model, the new RAV4 is equipped with support for DC standard fast charging (PHEV model) and a V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) function that can supply power from the vehicle to the home in the event of a disaster or other emergency, suggesting that the new RAV4 will not simply be a means of transportation, but will also create new value that enriches users’ lives and provides peace of mind. Furthermore, improvements to the entire powertrain have further increased motor torque, significantly reduced noise and vibration during engine start-up and acceleration, and dramatically improved quietness inside the vehicle, providing a more comfortable and high-quality driving experience.

Environmental performance and economy: Future-proof fuel efficiency

The target fuel economy is 22.5km/L to 26.0km/L in WLTC mode for the hybrid (HEV) model, and around 23.5km/L for the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model, so it is expected that the car will achieve both excellent power performance and environmental friendliness.

What is the expected price of the new RAV4?

Vehicle prices are expected to rise to a certain extent from the current model, reflecting the significant evolution and enhanced equipment, but are expected to start at approximately 4.2 million yen for the hybrid “RAV4 CORE” E-Four model and approximately 6.7 million yen for the PHEV “RAV4 GR SPORT” E-Four model, which will be competitively priced considering the value they offer. The official release date is set to be within fiscal year 2025, with December 17, 2025 being the most likely date.

CORE HEV E-Four 4.2 million yen
CORE PHEV E-Four 6 million yen

History of the RAV4

Considering past trends, the first and second generations underwent full model changes every six years. From the second to third generations, full model changes were made every five years and six months, and from the third to fourth generations, full model changes were made every seven years and two months. The fifth generation also underwent a full model change every six years and three months. Given this trend, it is highly likely that the next full model change will occur six years from now, around May 2025.

1st generation

Released in May 1994.

It went on sale in May 1994. It was exhibited at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show as the RAV-FOUR, and four years later, a prototype was unveiled at the 1993 Tokyo Motor Show, before being announced in May 1994. Kimura Takuya, then of SMAP, was appointed as the commercial character. A minor change was made in August 1996. Production ended in April 2000.

Second generation

May 2000: Full model change.

It uses components from the Corolla, which underwent a full model change three months later in August, but the floor panel is specially designed like its predecessor. A minor change was made in August 2003. Production ended in October 2005.

Third generation

November 2005: Full model change.

It was released in November 2005 and was the first commercially available vehicle to use the “New MC Platform,” an evolution of Toyota’s “MC Platform.” The front emblem uses an “N”-shaped emblem instead of the traditional Toyota mark. This was gradually adopted for models sold exclusively at Netz dealerships. A minor change was made on September 1, 2008. Orders were stopped and production ended in July 2016. Sales ended in August 2016. This marks the end of the RAV4’s 22-year history in Japan.
