Mitsubishi adds new Exforce Hybrid (HEV) model
Mitsubishi’s Indonesian subsidiary has announced and begun accepting orders for the Xforce HEV, a new generation hybrid model based on the Xforce. This hybrid model is scheduled to make its world debut at the Bangkok International Motor Show 2025, which will be held from March 26, 2025.
The Xforce HEV is a five-seater compact SUV developed with a focus on how compact SUVs are used in the ASEAN region, based on the concept of “the best companion for living an exciting life.” It will be released in Indonesia in November 2023, and is scheduled to be rolled out to ASEAN countries such as Vietnam and the Philippines, as well as Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East in 2024.
The hybrid model, along with the XPANDER HEV, will offer Thai customers a new electrification option. Employing an HEV system derived from Mitsubishi’s plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models, it delivers excellent fuel economy, environmental friendliness and powerful acceleration.
The X-Force Hybrid utilizes Mitsubishi’s strengths in four-wheel control technology, such as Active Yaw Control (AYC), to support front-wheel drive (FF), enabling safe and secure driving. Drivers can also select EV driving depending on the situation, ensuring quiet driving.
Mitsubishi Motors CEO Takao Kato said, “Demand for HEVs is growing worldwide as a primary electrification option that does not require charging infrastructure,” so we can look forward to the future development of the Exforce HEV.
The powertrain has evolved from the Xpander Hybrid, featuring a newly developed transaxle with improved transmission efficiency and a new motor disconnect function that disconnects the motor from the drive shaft at high speeds. This significantly reduces energy loss, achieving class-leading fuel economy of approximately 24.4 km/L. Hybrid driving employs a two-speed transaxle system that combines quiet driving at high speeds with powerful acceleration when climbing hills. Integrating the motor, generator, and transmission significantly reduces high-frequency noise, achieving a seamless ride similar to that of an EV. The engine specifications are based on a 1.6L inline four-cylinder engine, combined with a high-output motor and high-performance drive battery, resulting in a 40% improvement in thermal efficiency.
About the new Mitsubishi Exforce
The X-Force was developed as Mitsubishi’s new generation compact SUV, and the concept model “XFC Concept” was unveiled in October 2022. To enhance the SUV’s off-road performance, the production model features a class-leading ground clearance of 222mm for the internal combustion engine model and 183mm for the hybrid model.
The car also uses a hybrid system derived from the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) used in the XPANDER MPV sold overseas. The engine is a newly developed 1.6L gasoline engine, which uses the Atkinson cycle to improve combustion efficiency and an electric water pump to reduce mechanical loss. The drive battery is located under the front seat floor, maximizing passenger space. Fuel economy is rated at 24.4km/L (overseas).
There are seven drive modes in total: two for EV driving and five that provide optimal driving control according to road conditions.
In addition, the new Xforce is equipped with the latest infotainment system, and the audio system uses “Dynamic Sound Yamaha Premium,” jointly developed with Yamaha, improving the quality of the interior space.
