Mitsubishi may launch the new compact SUV, the X-force, in Japan around 2025. Mitsubishi Indonesia unveiled the new X-force compact SUV for the first time in the world on August 10, 2023 (local time). The vehicle will be produced at Mitsubishi Motors Krama Yudha Indonesia, and after sales begin in Indonesia, it is planned to be gradually expanded to other ASEAN countries, including Vietnam and the Philippines, as well as South Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. While no announcement has been made regarding its introduction to Japan, it has been revealed that production of the Japanese model of the same class , the RVR, will end around April 2024 , and the possibility of the X-force as a replacement is explained.

Mitsubishi New “Exforce” and “RVR” Body Size Comparison

We compared the RVR and Exforce, and although there are some differences in size, they are almost identical models, so it would not be surprising to see them as successor models.

Specifications RVR Exforce
full length 4,365mm 4,390mm
Overall width 1,770mm 1,810mm
Overall height 1,630mm 1,660mm
Wheelbase 2,670mm 2,650mm

The sales volume of “RVR” in Japan is very low, so I think it would be better to revamp it and release a new model in the same class rather than leaving it as a brand name. (Personal opinion)

Mitsubishi New “Exforce” and “RVR” Engine Comparison

The X-Force’s engine is a proven 1.5L DOHC 16-valve MIVEC engine combined with a highly efficient CVT. When the throttle is fully opened, the engine speed is controlled like a multi-speed transmission, resulting in a powerful and sharp acceleration feeling, while when the throttle is fully opened, the smooth shifting characteristic of a CVT maximizes engine performance, achieving low fuel consumption and quietness.

About the new Mitsubishi “Exforce”

The new X-Force is a five-seater compact SUV developed with a focus on how compact SUVs are used in the ASEAN region. Based on the concept of “Best-suited buddy for an exciting life,” the car features a stylish, powerful, authentic SUV design. Despite its compact body size that is easy to handle, it combines comfort and practicality with a spacious interior and a variety of storage spaces, realizing safe and secure driving performance in a variety of weather conditions and on a variety of road surfaces.

About the exterior of the new Mitsubishi “Exforce”

Based on the “Silky & Solid” concept, the vehicle’s stylish and powerful SUV design blends elegance and robustness, creating a striking presence in both urban and outdoor scenes in the ASEAN region. The upper body features flowing surfaces that connect the three-diamond design at the front to the sides and rear, creating a floating roof that creates a visually floating effect, evoking a silky smooth and light feel. The lower body features powerful and solid proportions befitting an SUV. A class-leading ground clearance of 222mm, 18-inch wheels and large tires ensure off-road performance, while a class-leading approach angle of 21.0 degrees and departure angle of 30.5 degrees allow for confident negotiating of large bumps. Furthermore, a minimum turning radius of 5.2 meters, the smallest in its class, allows for easy maneuverability, even when making U-turns, a common occurrence in ASEAN cities. The fender flares, reminiscent of robust muscle, convey athletic agility, complementing the vehicle’s authentic SUV styling.

At the front, the Dynamic Shield has been evolved to match the design concept. The front grille, which symbolizes the powertrain’s performance, is now integrated three-dimensionally with the protective design of the left and right bumpers, creating a sporty front face with a sense of depth. The LED daytime running lamps combine L-shaped and slit-shaped designs to emit light in a T-shape, creating an iconic design that makes it instantly recognizable as a Mitsubishi vehicle even from a distance, while also emphasizing the vehicle’s wide stance. The body sides feature sculpted front and rear fender flares and character lines that add definition to the taut, three-dimensional surface structure, expressing the strength and dynamism of an SUV. The rear also uses T-shaped LED tail lamps, just like the front, to create a wide, stable design.

About the interior of the new Mitsubishi “Xforce”

The instrument panel adopts the horizontal “HORIZONTAL AXIS” concept, enhancing forward visibility and making it easier to grasp changes in the vehicle’s posture when driving on rough roads. The dynamic shape of the instrument panel, which extends to the door trim, creates a spacious and open space. The instrument panel padding, a first for Mitsubishi, uses melange fabric, which continues through to the door trim, creating a sense of envelopment. While providing a modern and sophisticated impression, the highly practical, stain-resistant fabric creates a relaxing and comfortable space, reminiscent of a living room. The large monolithic panel, which integrates a 12.3-inch smartphone-linked display audio and digital driver display, also exudes a cutting-edge feel. The multi-widget display can be divided into three sections to provide a variety of information. The multi-meter display, which pays homage to the triple-meter display used in the classic Pajero, displays information such as altitude, front/rear/left/right tilt, and direction, enhancing the driving experience. The vehicle features a wide range of content, including Mitsubishi’s first driving score function, supervised by Hiroshi Masuoka, a two-time Dakar Rally champion. The first-ever WebLink application can be enjoyed on the wide screen, and smartphone screen mirroring is also possible. Rear passengers are equipped with drink holders that can hold a total of 21 600ml PET bottles. The floor console features a drink cooler that uses the cool air from the air conditioning to keep drinks cool. Smartphone-friendly storage space is also plentiful, with a wireless charger in the center console, USB Type A and Type C ports in both the front and rear seats, and space for smartphones at each seat. The rear seats are designed to accommodate three adults in comfort. The best-in-class seating provides ample legroom and ensures comfortable travel, even with three passengers. The rear seats feature a 4:2:4 split and eight-position reclining adjustment, covering a wide range of needs, from a comfortable seating angle for passengers to an angle that maximizes luggage capacity.

About the new Mitsubishi “X-Force” powertrain

The proven 1.5L DOHC 16-valve MIVEC engine is paired with a highly efficient CVT. When the throttle is fully opened, the engine speed is controlled like a multi-speed transmission, resulting in a powerful and crisp acceleration feeling, while when the throttle is fully opened, the smooth gear changes characteristic of a CVT maximize engine performance, achieving low fuel consumption and quietness. In addition, by improving driving force on slopes, the vehicle demonstrates powerful climbing performance without having to press the accelerator pedal hard, and by increasing engine braking when descending slopes, the hassle of frequent braking is reduced, resulting in a comfortable ride.

Utilizing Mitsubishi Motors’ four-wheel control technology, the car achieves the off-road performance you expect from an SUV despite adopting a front-wheel drive system. Four drive modes – Normal, Wet, Gravel and Mud – can be selected depending on the road conditions, and the Active Yaw Control (AYC) adjusts the drive force of the front left and right wheels to achieve high maneuverability, traction control to control tire slip, engine control and power steering control are integrated.
