On July 9, 2025 (local time), Mazda USA announced the 2025 model of its new crossover SUV, the CX-50. It ‘s noteworthy that the hybrid model is equipped with a Toyota engine and hybrid system. It’s extremely rare for Mazda to use an engine from another company rather than its own.
About the new Mazda CX-50 hybrid model
The 2025 CX-50, designed based on Toyota’s engine and hybrid system (THS), is equipped with the “2.5L inline 4-cylinder direct injection engine D-4S + motor (THS II),” which is also used in the “RAV4” and “Harrier.” This powertrain package consists of a 2.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine, a hybrid EV battery, three electric motors, an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT), and standard electric all-wheel drive (eAWD), achieving a maximum system output of 219 hp and a maximum system torque of 163 lb-ft.
Mazda engineers tuned every detail of the hybrid powertrain, including accelerator pedal response, to deliver the connected, responsive driving dynamics the CX-50 is known for. Drivers can also customize their driving experience with available drive modes, including Power and Trail modes, tailored to the situation. When equipped with Mazda’s official towing accessories, the CX-50 Hybrid can tow up to 1,500 lbs (680 kg), enough to carry two most common jet skis.

On the outside, it features a revised front bumper and unique 17-inch or 19-inch alloy wheels, and a hybrid-exclusive red leather interior is also available.
