Toyota first announced the TNGA concept in April 2012 as part of its efforts to realize its “ever-better car” initiative. Toyota vehicles released in recent years have adopted the “Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA),” and this article summarizes the models that will adopt the architecture as of 2024 and in the future.
What is Toyota New Global Architecture?
TNGA does not just refer to the platform, but also to the car-making system and policy that includes all processes, including planning, development, procurement, production preparation, and production, based on user feedback.
TNGA achieves “making ever-better cars” by cycling through the following four items:.
- Improved basic performance
- Grouping development for intelligent sharing of parts and units
- Cooperating with suppliers to reduce costs
- Improving product appeal
TNGA-adopted vehicles
The TNGA platform was gradually adopted by Toyota’s various models, starting with the new Prius, which went on sale on December 9, 2015. The new Camry, which went on sale on July 10, 2017, was the first to adopt TNGA for the entire powertrain and other components. Since then, as of 2024, it can be seen that almost all models, including overseas models, use TNGA.

Vehicles not adopting TNGA
Looking at the list of models that do not yet adopt TNGA as of 2023, the popular models that remain are the Alphard, Land Cruiser Prado, Century, and IS, and they are likely to become explosively popular after their full model change from 2023 onwards.

What exactly is TNGA?
I often hear about the TNGA platform, but is it really that different? I often hear that question, and the conclusion is completely different. As an example of a different car model, as mentioned above, I have purchased a model that transitioned from the third-generation Prius to the fourth-generation Prius TNGA platform, and a model that transitioned from the third-generation Harrier to the fourth-generation Harrier TNGA platform, and I can say that the ease of driving and the way it handles curves are completely different before and after the change to TNGA .
If you are not currently driving a Toyota vehicle that uses the TNGA platform, I highly recommend that you try driving a TNGA vehicle, any model, and you will definitely notice the difference.
