The exterior design has been changed (front bumper, headlights, etc.), and new body colors have been added. Inside, the meter display for the higher grade “WxB” has been upgraded from a 7-inch to a 12.3-inch TFT display. The display audio has been changed to a model compatible with the “Connected Navigation” system used in the new “Noah/Voxy” (personally, I find this disappointing). The “7-inch Display Audio” has been discontinued. ” 8-inch Display Audio ,” ” 10.5-inch Display Audio Plus ,” and “Display Audio-less Specification” have been added. The “CD/DVD” deck has been discontinued.

The gasoline engines, “inline 4-cylinder DOHC 1.2L direct injection turbo” and “1.8L inline 4-cylinder DOHC engine”, have been discontinued. In place of the new generation “inline 3-cylinder 1.5L direct injection Dynamic Force Engine M15A type” is combined with a “Direct Shift-CVT” with launch gear. Furthermore, the hybrid model uses a fifth-generation hybrid system, a series-parallel hybrid with a reduction mechanism that combines an improved inline 4-cylinder DOHC 1.8L engine “2ZR-FXE” with a motor . (As expected from Toyota, they used an older engine.)

The latest preventive safety package “Toyota Safety Sense” is equipped with advanced functions and improved functionality, and includes “low-speed acceleration suppression function,” “detection of oncoming vehicles and pedestrians when turning right at intersections,” and “emergency steering avoidance support function.” The “driver abnormality response system” is adopted, and a curve speed suppression function has been added to the “radar cruise control.”

The gasoline-powered vehicle will use the new generation ” in-line 3-cylinder 1.5L direct injection Dynamic Force Engine M15A type .” It will be paired with a “Direct Shift-CVT” with a launch gear . The new engine will feature high-speed combustion technology and a variable control system, as well as improved thermal efficiency by reducing various energy losses during exhaust, cooling, and mechanical operation, while also achieving high output.

The fifth-generation hybrid system employs a series-parallel hybrid with a reduction mechanism that combines an improved inline 4-cylinder DOHC 1.8L engine “2ZR-FXE” with a motor . Compared to the previous model, the front and rear motors have been significantly strengthened, with the front motor increasing its maximum output from 53kW (72ps) to 70kW (95PS) and its maximum torque from 163Nm (16.6kgm) to 185Nm (18.9kgfm), while the rear motor increases its maximum output from 5.3kW (7.2ps) to 30kW (41PS) and its maximum torque from 55Nm (5.6kgm) to 84Nm (8.6kgfm), resulting in a system output from 90kW (122ps) to 103kW (140ps).

About this major improvement
The latest improvements are full of changes that demonstrate Toyota’s impressive capabilities. The engine lineup is particularly noteworthy. I’ve mentioned the engine lineup in my experience and review of the Corolla Touring . The “inline-four, DOHC, 1.2L, direct-injection turbo” and “1.8L inline-four, DOHC” engines are one generation older, and while they’re certainly satisfactory in terms of specifications, they do fulfill the desire for a more modern engine. The ” inline-three, 1.5L, direct-injection engine (Dynamic Force Engine) ” is certainly a modern engine, with excellent specs and undoubtedly improved WLTC fuel economy. One disappointment is that the “inline-four, 2.0L, direct-injection engine (Dynamic Force Engine),” previously available only in the Corolla Sport , wasn’t offered in the Corolla or Corolla Touring. While it may be appropriate to use it in the Corolla Sport, which many people choose for its sporty features, the Corolla Touring and other models have a large trunk and are often used to carry a lot of items, so a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine would broaden the range of options. Of course, Toyota also has the option of hybrid vehicles, but given delivery issues caused by COVID-19, I believe this is a good option given that there is still demand for gasoline-powered vehicles in Japan. Finally, while future Toyota vehicles are being updated with new navigation systems, the current Connected Navigation system is still lacking in quality, so from a user’s perspective, I hope they can somehow upgrade it to a better navigation system. Potential buyers should consider this information before making their purchase.
