About the new Legacy Outback

Subaru has completely redesigned the new Legacy Outback, with reservations opening in Japan on September 2, 2021. It will be officially announced on October 7, 2021, and released on December 2, 2021. It uses the next-generation platform “Subaru Global Platform (SGP),” which is also used in the new Impreza and Crosstrek. The body measures 4,870mm in length, 1,875mm in width, 1,675mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,745mm.

Subaru New Legacy Outback Type B Partial Improvements

Subaru announced a partially improved version of the Japanese model B of the new Legacy Outback on September 8, 2022 .

In some improved models, the operability of the lighting switch has been revised, changing it from a single position for “sidelights/taillights & OFF” to two positions, split into “sidelights/taillights” and “OFF.”

New Legacy Outback D-type partial improvement

It is equipped with the next-generation EyeSight system, which is equipped with a wide-angle monocular camera in addition to a stereo camera. A smart rearview mirror with a built-in camera in the shark fin antenna has been adopted, improving safety performance while ensuring the luggage room’s loading capacity. The body color is available in an exclusive Cashmere Gold Opal color. The Limited EX genuine leather seat equipped vehicle has been given seat ventilation/cushion length adjustment mechanisms to improve product appeal. A new special edition vehicle, the Limited EX “Active x Black”, has been added.

About the new Legacy Outback engine

The engine has been changed from the previous model’s horizontally opposed 4-cylinder DOHC 2.5L naturally aspirated “FB25” type to a horizontally opposed 4-cylinder 1.8L DOHC direct injection turbo “DIT” with a maximum output of 130kW (177ps)/5,200-5,600rpm, maximum torque of 300Nm (30.6kgm)/1,600-3,600rpm, and WLTC mode fuel economy of 13km/L.

About the new Legacy Outback interior

The interior features a 12.3-inch full LCD meter. The navigation system is equipped with a large 11.6-inch full HD display. The HMI (Human Machine Interface) allows for easy operation in the same way as a smartphone. It is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Subaru Global Platform (SGP)

Subaru Global Platform

Subaru Global Platform

The next-generation platform, the Subaru Global Platform (SGP), which was announced in the mid-term management plan “Prominence 2020,” will be adopted. The first vehicle to adopt this new-generation platform, the Subaru Impreza , is scheduled for release in November 2016. Development is ongoing to achieve a “dynamic quality” that is one class above the rest, including further improvements in collision safety, weight reduction, improved driving performance, and increased interior space through highly efficient packaging.

The design is such that a single design concept can be used for a variety of power units, including not only gasoline engines but also hybrids (HVs), plug-in hybrids (PHVs), and electric vehicles (EVs).

The gradual rollout of hybrid models using new Toyota units ( the new Prius will be equipped with THS II, but the hybrid system will also be smaller) is planned to begin around 2018, and although SGP does not anticipate full electrification, it is a platform that is premised on hybridization. In other words, SGP will be a new platform that will be adopted in future Subaru vehicles, similar to Toyota’s TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture).

The EyeSight driving assistance system is standard on all vehicles.

Triple camera (stereo camera unit + wide-angle monocular camera)

The EyeSight driver assistance system has been updated, and now features a triple camera (stereo camera unit + wide-angle mono camera) that adds a wide-angle mono camera to the dual cameras . Improved performance. The new stereo camera unit has a significantly wider field of view, roughly twice that of the previous model. Improved image recognition and control software allow for wider and farther range recognition. The system has been changed to a windshield-mounted system, and a lens hood has been added to prevent accidental contact with the lens. The wide-angle mono camera has a wider field of view than the new stereo camera when driving at low speeds, and a new mono camera has been adopted that can recognize motorcycles and pedestrians. The range of situations in which pre-crash braking can be implemented has been expanded, achieving the best performance of any EyeSight model to date. The vehicle also features a Smart Rearview Mirror and the connected service SUBARU STARLINK .

Connected service “SUBARU STARLINK”

As part of “connected safety,” the car automatically sends an emergency call in the event of a collision. An operator will request rescue from the fire department or police, and by cooperating with cooperating hospitals, the advanced automatic emergency call system will lead to rapid life-saving efforts. In the event of an emergency, such as when the driver becomes ill, the car is also equipped with an SOS call function that connects you to an operator with the push of a button.

EyeSight Touring Assist “TJA (Traffic Jam Assist)” semi-autonomous driving system. A function for following vehicles in traffic jams on expressways (highways). Enables curve following in traffic jams. Assists driving by automatically controlling the steering, accelerator, and brakes at all vehicle speeds.

Pre-crash Braking: If the system determines there is a risk of a collision, it alerts the driver. If no evasive action is taken, it will apply brake control and automatically slow down or stop the vehicle. If the speed difference with the vehicle ahead is less than approximately 50 km/h, a collision will be avoided or damage will be reduced.

Active Lane Keep (Lane Departure Prevention) The active lane keep function (maintaining the center of the lane), which previously only worked at speeds of 60km/h or more, has been expanded to 0km/h, allowing it to follow the vehicle even in traffic jams, significantly reducing the burden on the driver.

Cruise control with all-speed tracking function. Cruise control with all-speed tracking function. Follows the vehicle ahead over a wide speed range from 0km/h to approximately 120km/h. (In response to planned increases in the maximum speed limit on some expressways.)

Automatic braking system when reversing

Rear Obstacle Warning Function: When an obstacle is detected behind the vehicle in R range, the MFD will display and sound an alarm to notify you of the obstacle’s proximity.

Automatic braking when reversing If the vehicle approaches an obstacle and there is a risk of rear-end collision, acceleration and braking control will be performed to try to avoid the collision.

EyeSight X is also standard equipment.

This is an “advanced driving assistance function” that can be added to the new generation EyeSight. It uses a 3D high-precision map unit jointly developed with Mitsubishi Electric and high-precision GPS information from the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System “Michibiki.”

EyeSight Safety Plus features

High Beam Assist : A monocular camera inside the front window detects light ahead and automatically switches between high and low beams depending on the situation, ensuring brighter and safer night vision.

Front View Monitor: The image from a camera mounted under the emblem in the front grille is displayed on the MFD to help the driver check what is ahead. This allows the driver to clearly see what is ahead, even when passing through intersections with poor visibility or pulling out of a garage.

The rear-mounted camera of the Smart Rear View Mirror ensures a clear view of the rear even when the luggage compartment is full of luggage or large items and a normal mirror cannot provide a clear view of the rear. It also allows rearward visibility to be confirmed from the passenger seat.

Auto Vehicle Hold: VDC keeps the vehicle stationary even when you take your foot off the brake pedal when stopped on level ground. This improves convenience in situations where you must keep your foot on the brake pedal, such as when waiting at a long traffic light or in a traffic jam on a public road.

Steering-linked headlights By illuminating the direction the vehicle is traveling early in response to steering operations, you can ensure a clear view even at night.

Furthermore, by combining EyeSight’s advanced forward recognition with omnidirectional radar, the vehicle is able to grasp the traffic environment and hazards around the vehicle in all directions. In addition, by utilizing high-precision GPS and high-precision map data, the vehicle’s position is pinpointed with high accuracy, and optimal control is performed according to the curves, lanes, etc. on the driving route. These technologies not only enable collision avoidance when driving straight ahead, but also achieve omnidirectional collision avoidance with vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians when turning right or left at intersections or reversing. Furthermore, autonomous driving at all speeds on highways and autonomous parking in parking lots at home or commercial facilities are realized.

Smart Rearview Mirror

The rear-mounted camera ensures rear visibility even when the luggage compartment is full of luggage or large items and a normal mirror cannot provide a clear view. It also allows rearward visibility to be confirmed from the passenger seat.

Safety System Comparison

While the previous model was equipped with EyeSight version 3, the new Legacy Outback now comes standard with the new-generation EyeSight X, which adds Touring Assist hands-off functionality to EyeSight . The system automatically assists with acceleration, braking, and steering by combining “Adaptive Steering,” “Lane Centering at 0 km/h,” and “All-Speed Cruise Control.” The Hitachi stereo camera has been replaced with a wide-angle camera from Sweden’s Vionir (with a resolution increased from 1.2 megapixels to 2.3 megapixels and a horizontal field of view nearly twice as wide). In addition to the existing rear-side radar and rear ultrasonic sensors, millimeter-wave radars are now installed on both sides of the front of the vehicle. The wider camera field of view is achieved by moving the camera cover closer to the windshield and further forward. The brake booster (a device that increases braking force) is now electrically operated, improving EyeSight response. The processor uses Xilinx’s Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC (multiprocessor system-on-chip), a FPGA.
