Porsche Japan has completely redesigned its compact SUV, the Macan. This change sees the elimination of the gasoline engine model and the introduction of a new all-electric vehicle (BEV), the Macan EV. Orders for the Japanese model, the Macan Electric, will begin on July 17, 2024.

The world premiere took place in Singapore on January 25, 2024. The new Macan will be available in four versions: Macan, Macan4, Macan4S, and Macan Turbo. The Macan Turbo is faster than the 911 GT3. It is also Porsche’s first model to be built on the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform. It also features an augmented reality (AR) head-up display that can project triple-screen navigation instructions.

About the new Porsche Macan full model change

The model offers Porsche’s hallmark E-Performance thanks to its 800V architecture, powerful latest-generation electric motors and cutting-edge battery and charging management. The successor to the successful compact SUV will be the sportiest model in its segment. In addition to repeatable class-leading performance figures, development goals include long-range capabilities and high-performance fast charging.

The PPE platform enables a wide range of models with rear- and all-wheel drive and various performance levels, including the top-of-the-line Macan Turbo, which boasts an impressive 630 hp (470 kW) and 833 lb-ft (1,128 Nm) of torque.

As with the Taycan, Porsche is introducing 800V technology in the next-generation Macan. This not only ensures consistent high performance and significantly reduces charging times, but also reduces the weight and space required for high-voltage cables. Furthermore, Porsche uses a hairpin-wound, permanently excited synchronous electric motor (PSM), which generates a permanent magnetic field within the motor by attaching permanent magnets to the rotor of an AC motor. Compared to an asynchronous motor (ASM), PSM offers higher power and torque density, better efficiency, and more repeatable power output.

To optimize efficiency, silicon carbide (SiC) is used instead of silicon as the semiconductor material in the rear axle’s pulsed-current inverter (PWR). The underbody is equipped with lithium-ion batteries with a total capacity of approximately 100 kWh, balancing range, performance, and sustainability. They can be charged with an even higher capacity than the Taycan’s 270 kW. At a suitably powerful fast-charging station, the battery’s charge level can be increased from 5 to 80 percent in under 25 minutes.

The new Macan measures 4,784mm in length, 1,938mm in width, 1,623mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,893mm. Compared to the previous model, it is 58mm longer, 76.2mm taller, and 86mm longer. Its exterior resembles the Cayenne Coupe, featuring a coupe-like roofline that slopes steeply toward the rear and wide fenders that conceal its EV base.

The new Macan EV’s expanded footprint also increases interior space. Rear seat legroom is now even more generous, and every new Macan offers an additional 4.4 cubic feet of storage space compared to the previous model. These improvements mean greater rear seat comfort and more cargo storage.

The new Macan’s interior features up to three screens. Behind the steering wheel is a new 12.6-inch digital instrument cluster, and between the 10.9-inch main infotainment screen is a dash-mounted toggle gear selector. Additionally, there’s an optional third screen above the glovebox, also 10.9 inches, that passengers can use to stream videos and use apps like TikTok.

The screen can be operated whether the car is moving or stationary to prevent drivers from looking, and it also features a new augmented reality head-up display that can project navigation images onto the road.

The instrument cluster has four different modes: Classic, Map, Full Map, and Pure. Classic mode resembles a traditional instrument cluster, while the two Map modes display navigation information. Pure mode uses arrows to display only “critical driving information such as speed, traffic signs, and navigation.” The digital instrument cluster has a large 16.8-inch display and uses real glass and a “deposited polarizing filter” with anti-reflective properties.

Below the infotainment system is a ramp-like center console with two rectangular air vents and an 8.4-inch touchscreen with haptic feedback. This allows easy access to climate control settings and the heated and ventilated front seats, and the screen has handwriting recognition technology, allowing users to easily enter addresses for the navigation system.

On the passenger side, there’s a central 10.9-inch infotainment display with voice control technology that supports “Hey Porsche,” as well as apps like navigation.

Porsche and Audi to jointly develop the new PPE platform for the all-new Macan

Using the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform, Porsche and Audi have jointly developed an architecture for fully electric vehicles, which allows them to enjoy the packaging and space advantages of a purely electric platform. At the same time, the architecture offers significant room for maneuvering wheelbase, track width, and ground clearance, enabling a wide range of models for different segments. The first Porsche based on the PPE platform is the Macan EV.

An electric motor is fitted to each axle, providing all-wheel drive. It is powered by a 100kWh 800V battery pack featuring the latest chemistry and design, and an integrated battery management system allows for DC charging at up to 270kW, enabling it to go from 10% to 80% state of charge in just 21 minutes.

The Japanese model is available in four versions: the Macan Electric, Macan 4 Electric, Macan 4S Electric, and Macan Tubo Electric. The base model, the Macan Electric, has a single motor, maximum output of 360 PS (265 kW), and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. The Macan 4 Electric has a dual motor, maximum output of 408 PS (300 kW), maximum torque of 479 lb-ft (648 Nm), accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, has a top speed of 220 km/h, and has a WLTP range of 613 km. The Macan 4S Electric has a dual motor, maximum output of 516 PS (380 kW), accelerates from 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, has a top speed of 240 km/h, and has a WLTP range of 613 km.

Meanwhile, the Macan Tubo Electric boasts superior dynamics, with dual motors producing 639 hp (470 kW) and 833 lb-ft (1,128 Nm) of torque. It boasts a top speed of 259 km/h, a WLTP range of 591 km, and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and 0 to 96 km/h in 3.1 seconds, faster than the 911 GT3’s 3.2 seconds. Both versions can send all power exclusively to the rear wheels, effectively turning them into rear-wheel-drive crossovers.
