About the Mitsubishi Crossover MPV “Xpander” and “Xpander Cross” Hybrid Models (HEV)

Newly developed 1.6L DOHC 16-valve MIVEC engine with high expansion ratio cycle (Atkinson cycle)

It employs a newly developed “HEV system” derived from the PHEV .

Adopts seven newly developed drive modes .

The newly added hybrid EV model (HEV) further enhances the appeal of the XPANDER series by combining Mitsubishi Motors’ specialty electrification technology with four-wheel control technology. The newly developed HEV system, derived from the plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV), delivers the environmentally friendly and comfortable driving that only an electric vehicle can offer. Based on a front-wheel drive (FF) 2WD system, the vehicle’s unique four-wheel control technology, including active yaw control, provides safe and secure driving at will, and a variety of drive modes provide optimal driving depending on the weather and road conditions.

Eco-friendly, refreshing and powerful motor drive with a PHEV-derived HEV system

The newly developed HEV system combines a newly developed 1.6L DOHC 16-valve MIVEC engine with a generator and a motor with a maximum output of 85kW, and employs a drive battery exclusive to this model. It consists of EV mode, hybrid mode, and regenerative mode. The system automatically selects the optimum driving mode according to the driving conditions and the remaining charge of the drive battery, achieving low fuel consumption while also achieving powerful and pleasant motor drive. When starting off or at low speeds, the EV mode uses power from the drive battery to drive the motor, allowing the vehicle to run on electric power alone.

When climbing hills or accelerating, the engine operates as a generator and combines power from the drive battery to run the vehicle on the motor, and at high speeds the vehicle switches to hybrid mode, where the engine runs on power with the motor assisting. Even in hybrid mode, the engine starts smoothly, allowing you to enjoy the pleasant driving experience that motor drive provides. In regenerative mode, when decelerating, regenerative braking is used to recover deceleration energy, which is converted into electricity and stored in the drive battery, making this possible only with a PHEV-derived HEV system.

The newly developed 1.6L DOHC 16-valve MIVEC engine uses a high expansion ratio cycle (Atkinson cycle) to improve combustion efficiency, and is the first Mitsubishi Motors engine to use an electric water pump to reduce mechanical loss. This has resulted in an approximately 10% improvement in engine fuel economy compared to gasoline engine CVT models , and an approximately 34% improvement in fuel economy in urban driving in NEDC mode, and an approximately 15% improvement in fuel economy when urban and highway driving are combined.

Seven newly developed drive modes that enable aggressive EV driving and safe, secure driving performance in a variety of weather conditions and on various road surfaces

The newly developed seven drive modes include two modes for EV driving and five modes that provide optimal driving control depending on road conditions.

An interior space that makes driving with family and friends more comfortable, and exclusive exterior accents that create a special feeling

The interior employs an 8-inch color LCD meter, which displays information unique to HEVs, such as a power meter that indicates the “Eco,” “Power,” and “Charge” status in response to accelerator operation, as well as energy flow, EV driving ratio, and remaining battery capacity. When switching drive modes, a graphic of the selected mode is displayed in the center of the display, making it easy to intuitively select a drive mode while driving. The screen can be selected between an advanced Enhanced mode and a Classic mode that mimics an analog meter, depending on preference.
