McLaren has improved its new Artura, its first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) supercar, and added the Spider model, which was announced and released in Europe on February 27, 2024.
Improvements to the new McLaren Artura
McLaren’s first hybrid supercar, the Artura, initially faced several challenges. It was criticized for its engine noise and electric driving range, and was only available as a coupe. To overcome these challenges, McLaren introduced the open-top Artura Spider. While it was 62 kg heavier than the coupe, its carbon fiber and aluminum construction helped to reduce weight.

Additionally, the 3.0L V6 engine’s output has been increased by 19 hp, bringing its maximum output to 596 hp (605 PS), with an additional 94 hp (95 PS) generated by an electric motor integrated into the dual-clutch transmission. For a total of 690 hp (700 PS) and 531 lb-ft (720 Nm), the car boasts performance on par with the coupe, with a 0-100 km/h time of 3.0 seconds and a top speed of 330 km/h . An improved exhaust system also contributes to a sportier sound. In addition to improvements to the suspension, transmission, and ABS, the all-electric range has been extended from 31 km to 33 km. The car now features a “spinning wheel pullaway” system, which allows the tires to spin during rapid acceleration from a standstill. This is a rare feature in supercars. The coupe model also receives similar updates.

The Artura Spyder is priced at $281,108/£221,500, about $25,000 more than the coupe, but given its exhilarating open-air driving and coupe-like performance, it’s a good value.
