Mazda Europe has registered the “MAZDA 6e” trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. The “6e” emblem, featuring a metallic-style gradient, has also been registered as a trademark. The application was published on the European Union Intellectual Property Office’s website on March 18, 2024.
Recently , on January 19, 2024, Mazda announced that it would end sales of the domestic flagship model “MAZDA6” (sedan and wagon) in Japan . Production of the domestic model is scheduled to end in mid-April 2024, but it is highly likely that it will be revived as an electrified model, the “MAZDA 6e.”
About the new Mazda “MAZDA 6e”
Mazda has never used the “e” designation next to a model code, limiting it to the electric powertrain “e-Skyactiv” series with the introduction of the MX-30 e-Skyactiv. However, this naming strategy may change as Mazda inevitably expands its lineup of EVs, hybrids, and PHEVs. Another interesting point is that, unlike its existing non-SUV lineup (Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6), the “Mazda 6e” filing has a space between the brand and model name. Rumor has it that the new Mazda6 will be compatible with both internal combustion and PHEV powertrains, sharing its RWD/AWD underpinnings with the CX-60.
“MAZDA6” A message from Mazda
Along with the announcement of the end of the “MAZDA6”, Executive Officer in charge of domestic sales Kazuyoshi Todo said, “The successive Atenza and MAZDA6 have been loved by many customers for a long time, with a total of 226,437 units sold in Japan as of the end of December 2023. Going forward, the MAZDA3 will take over the role of sedan, and the CX series of wagons, and we will deliver a lively experience to customers with driving pleasure that is in line with the times.” It seems highly likely that the car will not be released in the Japanese market for some time.
