Toyota’s two-door sports coupe, the GR Supra , was developed in collaboration with BMW and the Z4. US media outlets Carscoo P and AutoNews have reported that production of the current GR Supra and Z4 will end in 2026.
The future of the GR Supra
When AUTONEWS asked Toyota about the future of the GR Supra , they responded, “There’s nothing to announce at this time.” However, when pressed for more information, Toyota North America Group Vice President Dave Crist said, “The partnership with BMW has been successful,” and added, “We’re considering what to do next.” Crist also said, “If we want to create something, we’ll figure out how to do it.” This suggests that Toyota may develop a future Supra on its own, but that may be difficult to achieve.
GR Supra: Declining sales in the US also have an impact
Sales of the GR Supra in the US have been declining year by year, with 6,830 units sold in 2021. However, sales fell to 4,952 units in 2022 and further to 2,652 units in 2023. This represents a roughly 50% decline in Supra sales from 2022.
Sales of the original BMW Z4 have also been declining in the US, with 2,941 units sold in 2019 when the car was first released, but only 1,881 units sold in 2023. This decline is even more severe, and if it continues, it will likely become difficult to continue production.
A word from the editorial department
This news is extremely disappointing. Declining sales have made it difficult to continue production of both the GR Supra and the BMW Z4. If BMW were to end production of the Z4, it’s highly likely that production of the GR Supra would also automatically end.
It would take a huge amount of time and money for Toyota to develop the GR Supra from scratch. If things continue as they are, it is becoming increasingly likely that production will end around 2026. Personally, I would like to see Toyota fully redesign the Supra in 2026. We will keep you updated on future developments as new information becomes available.
