Toyota Europe has unveiled the latest prototype of the Hilux FCEV, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle based on the Hilux pickup truck. The project was announced in December 2022 , and the first prototype was unveiled in September 2023. Ten fuel cell Hilux prototypes are being manufactured at Toyota factories, five of which are being used for road testing, and the remaining five for demonstrations for customers and the media.
Toyota and its partners have received support from the UK government and have entered an intensive evaluation and demonstration phase.
About the new Toyota Hilux hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCEV)
Toyota is leveraging its 30 years of experience in hydrogen fuel cell research and development to contribute to the development of next-generation technology that will extend driving range and reduce costs. The Hilux Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCEV) uses technology from the Toyota Mirai and will achieve a range of up to 600km. Hydrogen’s light weight allows for higher payload and towing capacities compared to other zero-emission vehicles.

Europe is expected to become one of the largest hydrogen fuel cell markets by 2030, and Toyota announced its “Hydrogen Factory Europe” in December last year, demonstrating its comprehensive efforts to commercialize the technology.
The Fuel Cell Hilux prototype project will be an important step towards further developing hydrogen technology and facilitating the creation of a hydrogen ecosystem across Europe.

Toyota’s new Hilux hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCEV) specifications

Toyota hasn’t released specifications for the Hilux hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, but the Mirai’s powertrain produces 134 kW (182 hp) at 6,940 rpm and 300 Nm (30.6 kgm) of torque from 0 to 3,267 rpm, with only water coming out of the tailpipe. The regular Hilux’s 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine produces 150 kW (204 hp) and 368 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. The Hilux H2’s three hydrogen tanks likely have a lower range than the Mirai’s, which is approximately 750 to 850 km, due to its much poorer aerodynamics and the pickup’s increased weight.

A word from the editorial department
Adopting the amazing technology of the Mirai in another vehicle model, especially in the Hilux pickup truck, will be a big appeal to the world. We will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
