Volkswagen unveiled the new Golf R (Mk8.5) on June 26, 2024. Sales will begin in Europe in June 2024, and it is scheduled to be introduced in the US early next year. We’ll take a closer look at what the most powerful Golf will be like.

Following a preview earlier this month, Volkswagen has unveiled the updated Golf R and Golf R Variant, models that combine superior performance, modern styling and new technology.
Like the Golf GTI , the top-of-the-line Golf R features a new front end with sleek headlights and an illuminated Volkswagen logo . It also features a new bumper with a more aggressive look. At the back, it features matte chrome mirrors, sporty side skirts, and 18- or 19-inch wheels. It also features new taillights, a gloss black diffuser, and a four-tailpipe exhaust system. Volkswagen says the exhaust system’s sound has been “further developed to enhance acoustic feedback and the car’s motorsport feel.”
Customers looking for a sportier look can choose new 19-inch Warmenau forged aluminum wheels. Weighing just 17.6 lbs (8 kg) each, these wheels are approximately 20 percent lighter than conventional wheels, helping to reduce unsprung weight. Additionally, their open design improves brake cooling.
As an option, the Golf R can be equipped with an Akrapovič titanium exhaust, revised IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights and new 3D LED taillights with dynamic flash function.
Special edition Golf R Black Edition
A Golf R Black Edition will also be offered, featuring tinted headlights, dark logos and black components such as wheels, brake calipers and exhaust tips. The Black Edition comes standard with the Performance package.
About the interior of the new Volkswagen Golf R (Mk8.5)
The interior features a new 12.9-inch infotainment display , a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, revised climate controls, a sports steering wheel, the new IDA voice assistant, access to ChatGPT, and models equipped with the Performance Package get a G-meter and GPS lap timer display.
Additionally, the Golf R comes equipped with sport seats and faux carbon fiber trim. Other highlights include blue accents, stainless steel pedals, and a 30-color ambient lighting system.
About the new Volkswagen Golf R (Mk8.5) engine
Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that’s been upgraded to produce 328 hp (245 kW/333 PS) and 420 Nm of torque, an increase of 13 hp (10 kW/13 PS), the same output as the Golf R 333 Limited Edition .
The engine is connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring technology, allowing the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds . The Performance package increases top speed by 12 mph (20 km/h), taking it to a top speed of 167 mph (270 km/h).
About the price of the new Volkswagen Golf R (Mk8.5)
The Golf R starts at 53,795 euros (approximately 9.2 million yen), and the Estate (Golf R Estate) starts at 55,065 euros (approximately 9.42 million yen). Additional options include the Golf R Black Edition, a limited edition all-black model available from 58,440 euros (approximately 10 million yen).
