On July 11, 2024 (local time), the WRX Project Midnight, created by Subaru’s motorsports division, was unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024 held in the UK. Claiming to be the fastest WRX ever, this machine has captivated motorsports fans around the world with its overwhelming performance and unique design.
“Project Midnight” challenges the limits of the WRX

“Project Midnight” is an experimental car developed by Subaru to maximize the potential of the WRX. It features an ultra-lightweight carbon fiber body and a 2.0L horizontally opposed 4-cylinder turbo engine that produces a maximum output of 499kW (670ps) and a maximum torque of 680lb-ft (920Nm) . It rides on 18-inch wheels with 280-section Yokohama tires. It has been tuned specifically for circuit driving, applying technology from the WRX STI-based rally car, the “Air Slayer.”
Incredible performance and lightweight

What is particularly noteworthy is its incredible light weight. Thanks to a carbon fiber body and extensive weight reduction efforts, the vehicle weighs just 2,469 pounds (1,120 kg). This is 1,000 pounds (454 kg) lighter than the base WRX . This weight reduction enables performance that exceeds the limits of the WRX in all aspects, including acceleration, handling, and braking.
Aggressive aerodynamic design

The exterior of “Project Midnight” features an aggressive, wide and low design, with the fenders of the WRX ARA24 gravel rally car even wider than before. The huge rear wing and bodywork, which pursues aerodynamic performance, not only maximize downforce during circuit driving, but also suggest new possibilities for the WRX.
Making new history for the WRX at Goodwood

The WRX Project Midnight captivated the crowds at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024, fully demonstrating its true potential. This car not only demonstrates the new possibilities of the WRX, but also plays an important role in showcasing Subaru’s passion for motorsports and its advanced technological capabilities to the world.
It will be driven by Scott Speed and compete in the Timed Shootout at the 2024 Festival of Speed.
Is there a possibility of commercialization?

The WRX Project Midnight is currently an experimental car with no plans for commercialization. However, the technology and design of this car could have a major impact on future development of the WRX. WRX fans will likely continue to keep an eye on Subaru’s future developments.
