Kei cars are a popular choice, especially for those living in urban areas, due to their low maintenance costs and maneuverability. However, even though they are all called kei cars, there are a wide variety of models, each with their own unique features. If you choose one carelessly, you may end up regretting it and thinking, “This isn’t what I expected…” So, in this article, we’ll introduce the characteristics of kei cars you shouldn’t buy, and how to choose wisely to avoid regrets.
What kind of car is a kei car?
Kei cars are popular as second cars and for commuting to work or school due to their low maintenance costs and ease of handling. In recent years, their safety and comfort have also improved, making them popular as family cars.
- Compact size: The vehicle is extremely compact, with a total length of 3.4m or less, a total width of 1.48m or less, and a total height of 2.0m or less. This makes it easy to maneuver even on Japan’s narrow roads and in parking lots.
- Engine displacement of 660cc or less: Light vehicles must have an engine displacement of 660cc or less. Therefore, they are characterized by low maintenance costs and good fuel economy.
- Yellow license plates: License plates for light vehicles are different colors from those for regular cars: yellow for private cars and black for commercial vehicles.
Types of light vehicles
- Hatchback: Compact and maneuverable, it is convenient for driving around town and shopping.
- Sedan: It has a formal impression and can be used in business situations.
- Wagon: It has a large cargo space and is convenient for leisure and travel.
- SUV: Highly capable of traversing rough terrain, ideal for outdoor leisure activities.
- Open-top car: Enjoy the open feeling and enjoy driving.
There are various types of minicars, such as: Kei cars are practical vehicles that are suited to Japan’s road conditions and lifestyles.
The appeal of minicars
The vehicle price is low. (Depending on the model, the vehicle price is less than 1 million yen.)
High resale value. (Light cars are in high demand and tend to have high resale values.)
Low maintenance costs. (Many fuel-efficient models and the lowest automobile tax)
Easy to drive. (Light vehicle standards are 3.4m or less in length, 1.48m or less in width, 2m or less in height, 660cc or less in engine displacement, and a seating capacity of four or less. Therefore, they are smaller and more maneuverable than standard cars, making them easier to drive on narrow roads and for those unfamiliar with driving.)
automobile tax
The consumption tax increase took effect on October 1, 2019, and in conjunction with this , tax reforms were made in October 2019 , resulting in different amounts being taxed depending on when a car was purchased.

Characteristics of minicars you shouldn’t buy
Low safety performance
Because light vehicles are smaller and lighter than standard cars, they are generally considered less safe in the event of a collision. In particular, you should avoid older models that do not have the latest safety technology or models with low safety performance ratings.
- Older models . Generally, older kei cars tend to have lower safety performance because they are not equipped with the latest safety technology. Models manufactured before the early 2010s require particular caution.
- Low crash safety performance ratings . Models with low crash safety performance ratings, such as those from JNCAP (Japan New Car Assessment Program), leave you with concerns about safety in the event of a collision. Be sure to check the ratings before purchasing.
- Lack of safety equipment . Models that lack safety equipment such as automatic braking and electronic stability control increase the risk of accidents. Choose a model equipped with the latest safety equipment.
Driving performance is unstable
Some kei cars have poor driving stability on highways and are easily affected by crosswinds. They also lack power, making them difficult to drive on slopes and when merging into traffic. Those who frequently drive long distances or live in mountainous areas should be aware of this.
- Lack of power . Light cars, especially those with non-turbo engines, can feel underpowered. This can be stressful when accelerating, such as on a hill or merging onto the highway.
- Soft suspension . Light cars with soft suspension tend to lean significantly when cornering, making them less stable. They also tend to have poor straight-line stability on highways.
- High vehicle height . Light vehicles with high vehicle height have a higher center of gravity, making them more susceptible to crosswinds and prone to wobbling. Caution is especially required in places susceptible to wind, such as on highways and bridges.
The interior space is too small
The appeal of kei cars is their compact size, but if the interior space is too small, it can be inconvenient to load passengers and luggage. In particular, if you are planning to use the car for family use or leisure, you should also consider the size of the rear seats and the capacity of the luggage space.
- Narrow headroom . Some minicars have such narrow headroom that an adult’s head may hit the ceiling. This is especially important for tall people or those with child seats in the back seat.
- Narrow legroom . Kei cars with narrow legroom can make your legs tired on long drives. Models with narrow legroom in the back seats are particularly unsuitable for large groups.
- Narrow width . Kei cars are narrow, so it can feel cramped when three people sit side by side. Also, if you install two child seats, the space can become even more cramped.
- Small trunk space . Kei cars have a small trunk space, which makes them inconvenient for travel, leisure trips, and other occasions where you need to carry a lot of luggage. You need to be especially careful when carrying large items such as strollers or golf bags.
Poor fuel economy
There is a perception that light cars have good fuel economy, but depending on the model, there can be a big difference between the catalog fuel economy and the actual fuel economy. It is important to gather information about the actual fuel economy and check it by test driving before purchasing.
- Heavy minicars tend to have poor fuel economy. You should be especially careful with high-end models that are well equipped and have sliding doors.
- Equipped with a turbo engine . Turbo engines are powerful, but their fuel economy is inferior to that of naturally aspirated engines. If you prioritize acceleration performance, a turbo engine is an option, but if you prioritize fuel economy, choose a naturally aspirated engine.
- 4WD model . 4WD models offer excellent driving performance on snowy and rough roads, but their fuel economy is inferior to that of 2WD models. If you live in a snowy region or frequently drive on rough roads for outdoor leisure activities, 4WD is an option, but if fuel economy is important, choose 2WD.
- Poor aerodynamic performance . Kei cars with high ground clearance and models that prioritize design over aerodynamic performance tend to have poor fuel economy.
- Older models . Older minicars have outdated engine and transmission technology and may have poor fuel economy. The latest models often have improved fuel economy, so be sure to compare options before purchasing.
Low resale value
Unpopular models or models with many defects tend to have low resale value. If you are considering selling your car in the future, it is important to take resale value into consideration when making your selection.

How to choose wisely to avoid regrets
Choose according to your needs
If you plan to use it mainly for daily commuting, shopping, etc., we recommend a compact model that is easy to maneuver. On the other hand, if you plan to use it for leisure or long-distance driving, choose a model with excellent driving stability and load capacity.
Emphasis on safety performance
Safety performance is one of the most important factors when choosing a minicar. Choose a model equipped with the latest safety technology and also refer to safety performance ratings.
- Choose a model with the latest safety technology . Look for models that come equipped with the latest safety technology, such as automatic braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.
- Choose a model with a high crash safety performance rating . Choose a model with a high crash safety performance rating, such as JNCAP. The higher the rating, the higher the safety in the event of a collision.
- Choose a fully equipped model . Look for models that offer a full range of safety features, including airbags, electronic stability control, and traction control.
Test drive and check
It’s important to test drive a car to check ride comfort and driving performance, which cannot be determined by catalog specifications alone. If there is a model that interests you, be sure to take it for a test drive to determine whether it is the right car for you.
Actual fuel consumption information is also collected.
In addition to the catalog fuel economy figures, you should also gather information on actual fuel economy. It is also effective to refer to word-of-mouth and reviews on the Internet or to inquire at the dealer.
Think long-term
It is important to choose with a long-term perspective, taking into consideration maintenance costs and resale value after purchase.
Popular car models, their advantages and disadvantages
Popular models often have excellent performance and design, but they are also more expensive. Also, because they are popular, there is a higher risk of theft. Weigh the pros and cons and choose the model that is right for you.
