A word from the editorial department

With these improvements, the Yaris has evolved into an even more attractive compact car. In particular, the special edition Yaris URBANO, with its stylish design and comprehensive equipment, is sure to capture the hearts of urban users.

About Yaris

Toyota has completely redesigned the fourth generation of the Vitz, and at the same time changed the name of the car to the new Yaris. It was announced in Japan on December 20, 2019, and will be released on February 10, 2020. The gasoline 4WD model will be released in April 2020. The Yaris will be sold at Netz stores nationwide, Toyota Mobility Tokyo Co., Ltd., and Toyota Nishitokyo Corolla Co., Ltd. Prices range from 1,395,000 yen to 2,493,000 yen.

  1. It adopts the newly developed TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) ” GA-B platform .”
  2. The new generation ” inline 3-cylinder 1.5L direct injection Dynamic Force Engine M15A type ” uses the compact ” THS II “.
  3. It is equipped with the second-generation Toyota Safety Sense , an advanced preventive safety technology .
  4. The car comes standard with a display audio system and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A DCM in-car communication device is also included as standard.

The previous Vitz is a globally popular car model that was officially announced and launched on December 22, 2010. It is undergoing a full model change exactly nine years after its release . Toyota applied for the name “YARIS” with the Japanese Patent Office on April 16, 2018 , and with this full model change, the name will be changed from Vitz to the same as it is used overseas. This will result in the discontinuation of the Vitz brand, and the car will be reborn as the globally unified brand “YARIS . ” This shows the importance of Toyota’s compact cars in the coming aging society .

Selling global cars in Japan as part of a global strategy, rather than just Japan-exclusive models, and standardizing them worldwide will also lead to cost reductions. Toyota plans to change its sales network and standardize its models, eliminating waste to the fullest extent possible. The fourth-generation new “Yaris (Vitz)” was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show 2019, held from October 24th to November 4th, 2019 .

This time, the new car employs the newly developed ” GA-B platformbased on the ” TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) ,” resulting in a larger interior space than the previous model. The newly developed platform achieves excellent aerodynamic performance and results in a 50kg (development target) weight reduction, a 15mm lower center of gravity, and more than 30% increased body rigidity, making it a significant improvement over the previous model. It achieves a weight of 940kg to 1090kg, falling below 1000kg. Despite being a 5-number size (length: 3940mm, width: 1695mm, height: 150mm, wheelbase: 2550mm), the new car boasts a spacious interior and is expected to feature more luxurious specifications than the previous model. It also achieves world-class fuel economy of 36.0km/L in WLTC mode.

The car comes standard with a display audio system and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The car also comes standard with a DCM in-car communication device. Furthermore, the dedicated communication device DCM is standard on all vehicles, and the T-Connect service is provided free of charge for three years.

The luggage compartment size is 1,000mm wide, 630mm long (when five people are riding), and 692mm to 830mm high. All rear seats are foldable in a 60/40 split. An AC100V 1500W “accessory outlet” can be added to the hybrid model (optional 44,000 yen).

Yaris specifications

Hybrid vehicles

The hybrid system uses a new, downsized THS II in the new generation ” inline 3-cylinder 1.5L direct injection Dynamic Force Engine M15A type .” It can be adopted without any problems in terms of overall mass. By improving the thermal efficiency of the engine and the transmission’s transmission efficiency, the entire powertrain system (engine and transmission) improves fuel economy by approximately 25% and power performance by more than 15%. This makes it possible to dramatically improve fuel economy. An E-Four (4WD) model is also available. A newly developed 4WD- specific rear suspension, the double wishbone type, is used for the first time in a Toyota compact car.

In terms of fuel economy, the base model of the new Prius has seen its JC08 test fuel economy increase from 32.6 km/L to 40.8 km/L, an improvement of 8.2 km/L in JC08 test fuel economy. The new Aqua, using the same system and hybrid system, is expected to achieve the same fuel economy improvement. The old Vitz achieved a JC08 test fuel economy of 34.4 km/L in all grades, but the new Vitz is expected to achieve an improvement of around 42.6 km/L in JC08 test fuel economy. This exceeds the new Prius ‘s JC08 test fuel economy of 40.8 km/L, and it is certain that the new Prius will once again be ranked as the “world’s most fuel-efficient gasoline-fueled passenger car.” It has achieved a fuel economy of 36.0 km/L in WLTC test fuel economy.

Gasoline vehicles

The gasoline-powered vehicle also uses the new generation ” inline 3-cylinder 1.5L direct injection Dynamic Force Engine M15A type .” It is combined with a “Direct Shift-CVT” or “6MT” with a launch gear . An ” inline 3-cylinder 1.0L engine ” model will also be included in the lineup.

suspension

The front suspension uses MacPherson struts. The rear suspension is a torsion beam for 2WD and a two-link double wishbone for 4WD/E-Four.

Main features of Toyota Safety Sense in Yaris

It is equipped with the second-generation Toyota Safety Sense , an advanced preventive safety technology .

The second-generation next-generation Toyota Safety Sense, which is installed on the new Alphard/Vellfire that goes on sale on January 8, 2018, will be standard on all vehicles. It uses laser radar and cameras to ensure excellent recognition performance and reliability, and also includes collision avoidance support PCS, LDA, and AHB. It ensures collision avoidance support/damage mitigation performance that is compatible even at high speeds. As mentioned above, Toyota Safety Sense’s pre-crash braking system assists in collision avoidance when the relative speed with a pedestrian is within approximately 30 km/h, and in the case of a vehicle, it operates over a wide speed range from 10 km/h to the vehicle’s maximum speed.

Compared to the previous Toyota Safety Sense P, it is equipped with Pre-Collision Safety, which can detect bicycles during the day and pedestrians at night, as well as Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), which assists with steering operations necessary to keep the vehicle in its lane when Radar Cruise Control, which maintains a constant distance from the vehicle ahead, is activated.

Pre-crash Safety (PCS) with pedestrian detection detects obstacles ahead using laser radar and a camera. If there is a risk of collision, the system first alerts the driver with a buzzer and a visual display, prompting them to brake. If the driver notices a risk of collision and applies the brakes, powerful brake assist is activated. Even if the driver does not apply the brakes, for example, if the vehicle is traveling 30 km/h toward a stopped vehicle, the system will automatically brake to slow the vehicle by approximately 30 km/h, helping to avoid a collision. The automatic brakes operate over a wide speed range, from approximately 10 to 80 km/h, and are effective in over 80% of actual rear-end collisions. For pedestrians, the PCS’s automatic brakes are now activated at night, within the same speed range of approximately 10 to 80 km/h. Furthermore, the system now detects oncoming vehicles traveling straight ahead when turning right and pedestrians crossing the road after turning right or left (a first for Toyota).

The Road Sign Assist (RSA) has expanded its detection targets, and now also reads major roadside traffic signs such as “speed limit,” “stop sign,” “no entry,” and “no crossing” and displays them on the instrument panel.

The Lane Departure Alert (LDA) camera recognizes the white and yellow lines in the driving lane, and if it detects the possibility of lane departure, it alerts the driver with a buzzer and a visual display, helping to avoid collisions caused by lane departure.

The Automatic High Beam (AHB) camera detects the headlights of oncoming vehicles or the taillights of vehicles ahead and automatically switches between high and low beams, reducing glare for drivers of other vehicles and helping to ensure forward visibility at night.

Radar Cruise Control : This vehicle employs radar cruise control, which uses millimeter-wave radar to detect the distance between vehicles and the vehicle ahead, and adjusts its speed to match the speed of the vehicle ahead within a set speed range, allowing it to maintain a certain distance while following. Millimeter-wave radar and a camera detect lane changes by the vehicle ahead, allowing for smoother acceleration and deceleration control. Toyota aims for the ultimate goal of a mobility society: zero traffic fatalities and injuries. Toyota is researching and developing various safety equipment and systems based on its “Integrated Safety Concept,” striving to “develop safer vehicles and technologies,” and strengthening a wide range of traffic safety initiatives through “participation in traffic environment improvement” and “traffic safety awareness activities for people.”

Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), featured in the new Lexus LS series, is being adopted for the first time in the next-generation Toyota Safety Sense. When driving on a highway or expressway with radar cruise control activated, turning on the Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) switch provides steering assistance necessary to keep the vehicle in its lane.

Yaris active safety equipment

Intelligent Clearance Sonar (Parking Support Brake Stationary) is a system that helps mitigate collisions caused by accidentally pressing the accelerator or pressing it too hard, thereby reducing damage. The “Clearance Sonar” displays and sounds a buzzer when approaching stationary objects while parking, and now has an added function to mitigate contact with stationary objects. The sonar can also accurately detect glass at convenience stores and other locations. When driving at low speeds (below 15km/h), if a stationary object is detected in the direction of travel, the hybrid system output is reduced, and if the distance becomes even shorter, the brakes are automatically applied.

Leading vehicle departure notification function If you are stopped behind a vehicle in front of you at a traffic light or in a traffic jam and do not notice the vehicle in front of you starting to move, a buzzer will sound and a message will appear on the display to notify you.

Emergency brake signal (hazard lights flashing type) When you apply the brakes suddenly, the hazard lights will automatically flash.

Secondary Collision Brake When the SRS airbag sensor detects a collision and activates, it automatically controls the brakes and brake lights to slow the vehicle and help mitigate damage from a secondary collision.

Digital inner mirror: Images from a camera mounted on the rear of the vehicle are displayed on the rearview mirror.

Advanced parking assistance system “Advanced Park” (Toyota’s first) controls not only the steering wheel but also the accelerator and brake, assisting with the operations required for parking. Hybrid model optional setting (77,000 yen to 93,500 yen).

Easy Return Seat: Allows you to find your preferred driving position and then easily return to your previous position manually.

Turn-tilt seats The driver’s and passenger’s seats rotate and tilt, making it easy to get in and out of the car.

Differences between the next-generation Toyota Safety Sense and Toyota Safety Sense C

The new Yaris will adopt the “Next Generation Toyota Safety Sense” instead of the “Toyota Safety Sense C” used in the Vitz, which will result in significantly added functionality and improved safety.

Toyota’s new Yaris partial improvement adopts “Toyota Safety Sense” proactive driving assist

By anticipating risks according to the driving situation, such as “pedestrians crossing the road” or “people who may suddenly appear in front of you,” the system supports driving operations to prevent drivers from getting too close to danger, leading to peace of mind for the driver. In addition, by supporting deceleration operations for preceding vehicles and curves ahead and reducing the need to frequently change pedals, the system provides gentle support to the driver on public roads and other roads.

Steering and deceleration assistance for pedestrians, cyclists, and parked vehicles

It anticipates risks and supports steering and braking to prevent the driver from getting too close to danger.

Assistance for slowing down the vehicle ahead

When a preceding or adjacent vehicle is detected cutting in, the system gently decelerates in response to the driver’s release of the accelerator to prevent the vehicle from getting too close.

Curve deceleration assistance

If the system determines that the vehicle’s speed is too fast for the curve ahead, it will gradually slow down in response to the driver’s release from the accelerator.

Deceleration assistance when turning right or left

When the system detects that the vehicle is approaching a traffic light intersection, it assists the driver in decelerating in advance according to whether the driver releases the accelerator or operates the turn signal, ensuring sufficient maneuverability when turning left or right.

Constant steering assistance while driving within the lane

By anticipating the driver’s operations and varying the steering reaction force, unnecessary operations are suppressed, delays in operation are prevented, and smooth driving is supported.
