The much-talked-about “Wagon R EV”

The initial rumor about the Wagon R EV began with the announcement of the “Growth Strategy Briefing for Fiscal Year 2030” on January 26, 2023. The company announced plans to launch a four-wheeled BEV (battery electric vehicle).

Suzuki has announced the launch of six EVs in the Japanese market, with the launch of BEVs (battery electric vehicles) to begin in fiscal 2023. Among these, the silhouette of an unknown minicar was shown twice, suggesting a passenger car and panel van body style with nearly identical appearances.

Two more minicars are planned, one of which will be an electric version of the Suzuki Hustler, and the other a potential successor to the Every. However, there’s also the possibility of it being a successor to the Spacia or Wagon R, so attention is focused on future announcements.

I got to see the eWX light wagon EV up close, which was unveiled at the JAPAN MOBILITY SHOW 2023, held at Tokyo Big Sight from October 26 to November 5, 2023. It was clearly confirmed that the concept is the Wagon R EV. However, the plan to launch the car on the market between the end of 2023 and mid-2024 is very early, so it seems quite unlikely that the Wagon R will undergo a full model change at this time.

The development of the Wagon R EV is an important part of Suzuki’s electrification strategy. The current Wagon R already uses a mild hybrid system, but by going full EV, further improvements in environmental performance are expected. The vehicle is expected to maintain the Wagon R’s signature high practicality and economy, while also combining the quietness and powerful acceleration that only an EV can offer.

The release date of the Wagon R EV appears to be being carefully considered based on Suzuki’s electrification plans. Whether or not to align the timing of the full model change with the timing of the EV conversion will be decided based on the state of technological readiness and market trends. For Wagon R fans, the form in which the next model will appear is a major point of interest.

A word from the editorial department

This is the first full model change for the Wagon R in nine years. The automotive industry and technology have evolved over the past nine years, so the new Wagon R will undoubtedly be a much more advanced model than the current model. Of particular note is the adoption of the “electric parking brake” and “auto brake hold” features that have recently been installed in Suzuki vehicles. This could potentially attract the attention of people who previously were put off by Suzuki cars due to the lack of these features.

Furthermore, if the quality of the exterior and interior is improved, the Wagon R should be able to compete with other companies. Also, Daihatsu’s long- rival, the Move, is about to undergo a full model change, but due to the impact of Daihatsu Motor’s fraud scandal, the timing of the full model change remains undecided. Therefore, it is possible that the Wagon R will be released at the same time. However, since it is being sold after the scandal, there is a good chance that the Wagon R’s sales volume will exceed that of the Move. Let’s look forward to the release date!
