About the new second-generation BRZ

Due to the partnership between Toyota and BMW, Toyota released the new Supra and BMW released the new Z4 on March 25, 2019, leading to rumors that a next-generation BRZ sports car, also jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru, would not be developed. However, Fuji Heavy Industries (SUBARU Corporation) has been Toyota’s largest shareholder since 2005, and the two companies have agreed to a partnership. Development departments with Toyota and its subsidiary Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. (a Toyota subsidiary), have been working to reduce costs through exchanges and parts sharing, and development appears to be proceeding unchanged. Subaru President Yasuyuki Yoshinaga stated in an interview that the BRZ has no intention of ending with a single generation. The 86 and BRZ are popular as affordable sports cars, and the development of a new model will enhance the corporate image of both companies. The exterior will retain its original concept, while new engines and other components will be added to the lineup.

The new BRZ, which maintains the same concept, features more curvaceous bodywork than the previous model, a different bumper and hood at the front end, wider fenders, and of course, new headlights. It also features a rear spoiler integrated into the boot and a set of the latest LED headlights. It also features twin exhaust pipes and wide hip fenders. It incorporates know-how gained from the development of the Subaru Global Platform, as well as an inner frame structure and structural adhesives. Compared to the first-generation model, front lateral bending rigidity has been significantly improved by approximately 60% and torsional rigidity by approximately 50%. Lightweight aluminum is used for the roof, hood, and front fenders. Optimized front-to-rear and left-to-right weight distribution and a lower center of gravity have been achieved, improving driving performance. Vehicles equipped with 18-inch aluminum wheels are fitted with 215/40R18 Michelin Pilot Sport tires.

Second-generation new BRZ full model change exterior

The lower and wider hexagonal grille emphasizes the low center of gravity, and the core-like shape that starts from the grille and continues to the rear expresses the strength of the trunk. The dynamic accents of the tapered cabin and powerfully jutting fenders heighten the expectation of a sports car-like driving experience.

Second-generation new BRZ full model change interior

The simple horizontal instrument panel and low-set meter visor ensure a wide field of view, providing an interior space where you can concentrate and enjoy driving. The interior is equipped with a digital meter that combines a 7-inch TFT LCD panel and a segment LCD panel.

What engine will the new 2nd generation BRZ be equipped with?

The new naturally aspirated 2.4L horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine produces 228 HP at 7,000 rpm and 184 lb-ft of torque, and is available with a choice of a standard 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. Torque has been increased by 15% over the previous model. For vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, the SPORT mode control has been improved. When the car determines it is in a sporty driving mode, it automatically performs optimal shifting in response to the driver’s intentions and operations, allowing for a more direct cornering feel.

Subaru has completely redesigned the new Impreza Sport / G4 sedan and began selling it on October 25, 2016. The new car is built on the next-generation platform, the Subaru Global Platform (SGP) .

Subaru Global Platform (SGP)

The new platform will be the Subaru Global Platform (SGP) , which was announced in the company’s mid-term management plan, “Prominence 2020.” The first vehicle to adopt this new-generation platform, the SGP, is the new Impreza , which was released in November 2016. Development is ongoing to achieve a “dynamic quality” that is one class above the rest, including further improvements in collision safety, weight reduction, improved driving performance, and increased interior space through highly efficient packaging.

The gradual rollout of hybrid models using new Toyota units (the new Prius will be equipped with THS II, but the hybrid system will also be more compact) is planned to begin around 2018, and while the SGP does not anticipate full electrification, it is a platform that is premised on hybridization. In other words, the SGP will be a new platform that will be adopted in future Subaru vehicles, similar to Toyota’s TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture).

About EyeSight in the new 2nd generation BRZ

The EyeSight driver assistance system is standard on automatic transmission vehicles, and it also features pre-crash braking and adaptive cruise control with full-speed range tracking.

Pre-crash Braking:  If the system determines there is a risk of a collision, it alerts the driver. If no evasive action is taken, it will apply brake control and automatically slow down or stop the vehicle. If the speed difference with the vehicle ahead is less than approximately 50 km/h, a collision will be avoided or damage will be reduced.

Active Lane Keep (Lane Departure Prevention)  The active lane keep function (maintaining the center of the lane), which previously only worked at speeds of 60km/h or more, has been expanded to 0km/h, allowing it to follow the vehicle even in traffic jams, significantly reducing the burden on the driver.

Cruise control with full-speed  following function. Set of cruise control with full-speed following function. Follows the vehicle in front over a wide range of speeds.

Rear Obstacle Warning Function: When an obstacle is detected behind the vehicle in R range, the MFD will display and sound an alarm to notify you of the obstacle’s proximity.

Automatic braking when reversing If the vehicle approaches an obstacle and there is a risk of rear-end collision, acceleration and braking control will be performed to try to avoid the collision.
