Porsche will completely redesign its compact SUV sports car, the Macan, discontinuing the gasoline engine model and introducing the all-electric Macan EV, which will be released in 2024. The world premiere was held in Singapore on January 25, 2024. Two grades will be available: the Macan 4 and the Macan Turbo. It is faster than the Macan Turbo and the 911 GT3 . It is Porsche’s first model to use the new platform, the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) . It is equipped with an augmented reality (AR) head-up display that can project navigation instructions on a triple screen.

About the new Porsche Macan full model change

With its 800V architecture, powerful latest-generation electric motors and state-of-the-art battery and charging management, the model offers Porsche’s hallmark E-Performance. The successor to the successful compact SUV will be the sportiest model in its segment. In addition to repeatable class-leading performance figures, development goals include long-range capability and high-performance fast charging.

The PPE platform allows for a wide range of models with rear- and all-wheel drive and various performance levels, including the top-of-the-line Macan Turbo, which boasts an impressive 630 hp (470 kW) and 833 lb-ft (1,128 Nm) of torque.

Like the Taycan, Porsche will use 800V technology in the next-generation Macan. This ensures consistent high performance, significantly shortens charging times, and reduces the weight and space required for high-voltage cables. Another common feature is Porsche’s use of a hairpin-wound, permanently excited synchronous electric motor (PSM). A permanent magnet is attached to the AC motor’s rotor, creating a permanent magnetic field within the motor. Compared to an asynchronous motor (ASM), the PSM offers higher power and torque density, greater efficiency, and more reproducible power output. To optimize efficiency, silicon carbide (SiC) is used instead of silicon as the semiconductor material in the rear axle’s pulse inverter (PWR). The underbody is equipped with a lithium-ion battery with a total capacity of approximately 100 kWh. The company is exploring how to balance range, performance, and sustainability. It charges with a charging capacity even higher than the Taycan ‘s 270 kW. At an appropriately powerful fast-charging station, the battery can be charged from 5% to 80% in less than 25 minutes.

The new Macan measures 4,786mm long, 2,151mm wide, and has a wheelbase of 2,893mm tall. It’s 58mm longer, 76.2mm taller, and 86mm longer than the previous Macan. It resembles the Cayenne Coupe, with a coupe-like sloping roofline that slopes steeply toward the rear, and wide fenders that conceal its EV underpinnings.

The new Macan EV’s expanded footprint also increases interior space: rear passengers get more legroom, and the all-new Macan offers an additional 4.4 cubic feet of storage space in comparison.

Of the additional cargo space, 2.9 cubic feet is under the hood.

The new Macan features a new interior that makes extensive use of up to three screens . It features a new 12.6-inch digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and a dash-mounted toggle gear selector between the 10.9-inch main infotainment screen. An optional third screen above the glovebox, also 10.9 inches, allows passengers to stream videos and use apps like TikTok.

This can be done whether the car is moving or stationary, as the screen’s surface prevents the driver from looking in. It features a new augmented reality head-up display that can project navigation images onto the road.

The instrument cluster features four different modes: Classic, Map, Full Map, and Pure. Classic mode resembles a traditional instrument cluster, but the two map modes display navigation information. Meanwhile, Pure mode uses arrows to display only “critical driving information, such as speed, traffic signs, and navigation.” The digital instrument cluster features a large 16.8-inch display with a “coated, vapor-deposited polarizing filter” that gives it real glass and anti-reflective properties. Beneath the infotainment system is a lamp-like center console featuring two rectangular air vents and an 8.4-inch touchscreen with haptic feedback. Climate control settings and heated/ventilated front seats are easily accessible, and the screen features handwriting recognition technology, allowing users to easily enter addresses into the navigation system.

The passenger side has a central 10.9-inch infotainment display with voice control technology for “Hey Porsche” and apps such as navigation.

Porsche and Audi to jointly develop the new PPE platform for the all-new Macan

Using the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) platform, Porsche and Audi have jointly developed an architecture for fully electric vehicles, which allows the advantages of a purely electric platform to be enjoyed in various ways, for example in terms of packaging and space. At the same time, this architecture offers enormous room for maneuvering wheelbase, track width, and ground clearance, so it can be used to realize a variety of models, including those in various segments. The first Porsche based on the PPE platform is the Macan EV.

It features all-wheel drive with an electric motor on each axle. It is powered by a 100kWh 800V battery pack featuring the latest chemical mix and design. The integrated battery management system allows DC charging at up to 270kW, enabling it to go from 10% to 80% state of charge in just 21 minutes.

Two versions are available: the Macan 4 and the Macan Turbo, with more planned for the future. The base Macan 4 produces 402 hp (300 kW) and 479 lb-ft (648 Nm) of torque, accelerating from 0 to 96 km/h in 4.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 219 km/h. The Macan Turbo offers significantly better dynamics, producing 630 hp (470 kW) and 833 lb-ft (1,128 Nm) of torque. It has a top speed of 259 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 96 km/h in 3.1 seconds, faster than the 911 GT3 ‘s 3.2 seconds. Both versions can send all power exclusively to the rear tires, effectively turning them into rear-wheel-drive crossovers.
