Mazda has applied for and registered the exterior design of its compact sports car concept, the “MAZDA ICONIC SP,” with the Japan Patent Office ( Design Registration 1745130 ). Registering a design may signal some sort of commercialization. Furthermore, the “MAZDA ICONIC SP” will be on display at Mazda’s Hiroshima headquarters showroom from March 13, 2024 , so if you haven’t seen it yet, why not stop by?
About Mazda ICONIC SP
The MAZDA ICONIC SP was unveiled to the world for the first time on October 25, 2023, at the JAPAN MOBILITY SHOW 2023. It uses a lightweight and compact two-rotor Rotary-EV system. The concept of mounting it closer to the center of the car allows for a low hood. There have been various opinions on social media, with some suggesting it could be the new MX-5 (Roadster) or the new RX-7.
In creating the “framework” that forms the basis of the car’s design, the aim was to achieve low-center-of-gravity proportions that convey superior dynamic performance. The low hood was achieved by mounting the lightweight, compact rotary engine close to the center of the car. The two-rotor Rotary-EV system, which utilizes a highly scalable rotary engine that can burn a variety of fuels, including hydrogen, generates electricity using carbon-neutral fuel. When the onboard battery is charged with electricity derived from renewable energy, it can be driven virtually carbon-neutral. The high output generated by the two-rotor Rotary-EV system, combined with the low center-of-gravity proportions and 50:50 front/rear weight distribution, achieves excellent dynamic performance. Despite being a sports car, it is also capable of supplying power when enjoying outdoor leisure activities or in the event of a disaster.

The body color “VIOLA RED” is a concept color created based on Mazda’s desire to “cherish the color red” and Mazda’s corporate philosophy of “expanding the circle of people who live each day positively.”

Compact sports car “MAZDA ICONIC SP” – will it become Mazda’s new “RX-7”?
What does the future hold for Mazda in the age of electrification? The new Mazda Vision SP Concept offers a glimpse into the potential of this series. First impressions of the Mazda Iconic SP may evoke memories of the legendary FD RX-7. It features a twin-rotor powertrain. Furthermore, its distinctive headlights, shaped like retractable headlights, could suggest a revival of the RX-7. Some consider it akin to the MX-5 (Roadster), but considering the lack of an open-top, this seems unlikely.
