The partially improved Corolla Sport is equipped with the latest engine
The Corolla Sport will undergo some improvements on October 3, 2022. Pre-orders have started, and we’ve checked the prices and specifications at a dealership, so we’ve put together a summary of the details.
- The exterior design has been changed.
- The meter display for higher grade models will be a 7-inch to 12.3-inch TFT display.
- The display audio has been enlarged. The 7-inch display audio has been discontinued. It is now the 8-inch display audio and the 10.5-inch display audio plus .
- The navigation system has been changed to the new “Connected Navi” system used in the new “Noah Voxy” and other models .
- It is equipped with the latest preventive safety package, “Toyota Safety Sense,” which adds advanced functions and improves functionality .
- Changes to the engine lineup.
The exterior design has been revised (front bumper, headlights, etc.), and the meter display for the premium “G”Z” grade has been upgraded from a 7-inch to a 12.3-inch TFT display . The display audio has been upgraded to a model compatible with the Connected Navigation system found in the new Noah and Voxy (a personal disappointment). The 7-inch display audio has been discontinued. An 8-inch display audio , a 10.5-inch display audio plus , and a display audio-less specification have been added. New body colors have been added. The inline-four, DOHC, 1.2L direct-injection turbo engine has been discontinued, replaced with a new inline-four, 2.0L direct-injection engine (Dynamic Force Engine) (previously, the Corolla series sold a special edition “2000 Limited” limited to 500 units). Furthermore, the hybrid model employs a series-parallel hybrid with a reduction mechanism , combining a fifth-generation hybrid system with an improved inline-four, DOHC, 1.8L engine, the 2ZR-FXE, and a motor . Equipped with the latest preventive safety package “Toyota Safety Sense” that adds advanced functions and improved functionality, it adds “low-speed acceleration suppression function”, “detection of oncoming vehicles and pedestrians when turning right at intersections”, and “emergency steering avoidance support function”. It also adopts “driver abnormality response system” and adds curve speed suppression function to “radar cruise control”. “CD/DVD” deck has been abolished.
Inline 4-cylinder 2.0L direct injection engine (Dynamic Force Engine)
The gasoline engine is a new inline 4-cylinder 2.0L direct injection “Dynamic Force Engine” with a maximum output of 125kW (170PS) at 6,600 rpm and a maximum torque of 202Nm (20.6kgfm) at 4,900 rpm. The new engine employs high-speed combustion technology and a variable control system, as well as reducing various energy losses during exhaust, cooling, and mechanical operation, improving thermal efficiency and achieving high output. As a result, the newly developed 2.0L gasoline engine achieves a world-leading thermal efficiency of 40%. Furthermore, compared to conventional engines, it achieves increased torque across the entire range, from low to high revolutions, while also meeting emissions regulations in advance of other countries. It is mated to a “Direct Shift-CVT” with a launch gear .

Hybrid system: Inline 4-cylinder DOHC 1.8L engine + motor
The fifth-generation hybrid system is a series-parallel hybrid with a reduction mechanism that combines an improved inline 4-cylinder DOHC 1.8L engine “2ZR-FXE” with a motor . Compared to the previous model, the front and rear motors have been significantly strengthened, with the front motor producing a maximum output of 70kW (95PS) and a maximum torque of 185Nm (18.9kgfm), while the rear motor produces a maximum output of 30kW (41PS), a maximum torque of 84Nm (8.6kgfm), and a system output of 103kW (140ps).

New Corolla Sport partial improvement price grade
The biggest change in this partial improvement model is the discontinuation of the “MT” model. The “1.2L turbo engine” has also been discontinued. The “inline 4-cylinder 2.0L direct injection engine ‘Dynamic Force Engine'” has been added to the lineup instead. Furthermore, when compared with the same grade, the price has increased by 40,000 to 74,000 yen, which is due to the weak yen and improvements. If you have to choose, we recommend choosing the “G” or “G”Z” grade.

About this major improvement
The improvements made this time are full of changes that show just how impressive Toyota is. Particularly praised is the change to the engine lineup , the “inline-four 2.0L direct-injection engine (Dynamic Force Engine).” I have mentioned the engine lineup in my experience and review of the Corolla Touring , but the “inline-four DOHC 1.2L direct-injection turbo” and “1.8L inline-four DOHC engine” are older engines from a generation ago, and while the specifications are satisfactory, the latest engine has been adopted this time, fulfilling all the requirements.
