Subaru of America announced on April 24, 2024 (local time) that production of the Legacy sedan will end with the end of the 2025 model year next year.

The current model was announced in February 2019 and went on sale in the fall of the same year. It is not sold in markets outside of North America, including Japan. Orders for the Legacy B4 sedan for the Japanese market ended on June 22, 2020, and sales have ceased. The 2025 Legacy will arrive this spring, with prices starting at $24,895.

Legacy production and sales to end in the U.S. in 2025

Subaru cited the “market shift from passenger cars to SUVs and crossovers” and its shift to electric vehicles as reasons for the Legacy’s end. Indeed, sales of the sedan haven’t been particularly strong. Subaru sold 4,398 Legacys in the first quarter of 2024, a 13.1% decrease compared to the same period last year. After 36 years in Subaru’s North American lineup, the sedan will cease production in the spring of 2025, marking the end of its production run at the end of that model year. The sedan will begin arriving at dealerships this spring, with pricing starting at $24,895, unchanged from the 2024 model.

About Subaru Legacy

The new Legacy, which began production in the United States on July 30, 2019 (local time), was unveiled at the 2019 New York International Auto Show, held from April 19 to 28, 2019. This full model change marks the arrival of the seventh-generation Legacy, and it adopts the next-generation platform, the Subaru Global Platform (SGP). The body measures 4,840mm in length, 1,840mm in width, 1,500mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,745mm.

The 2023 model year saw a facelift, with a revised front bumper design. The LED daytime running lights on the headlights were also reshaped for a bolder look. The car also features a red grille accent and Magnetite Gray Metallic side mirrors and rear spoiler. Additionally, the car is equipped with 18-inch aluminum wheels with a gray finish. The Legacy Sport grade features exclusive black and gray upholstery with red contrast stitching.

The 11.6-inch Starlink infotainment system offers wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, plus “improved on-screen controls for audio, HVAC, and vehicle functions.” Additionally, models with navigation boast new what3words integration. Also included are a power moonroof and GPS navigation.

Additionally, the EyeSight driver-assistance system has been updated, with the top trim level now featuring three cameras, including dual cameras and a wide-angle mono camera. A new autonomous emergency steering system is also available on trim levels with blind-spot detection, lane-change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert, and uses a combination of EyeSight and automatic braking to help avoid accidents at speeds under 50 mph.

The Legacy Sport and Touring XT all-weather package includes a 360-degree heated steering wheel, which provides warmth wherever you touch. The Touring XT also gets new Slate Black Nappa leather upholstery with contrasting silver stitching.

On the safety front, models now feature blind spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert, along with automatic emergency steering to help avoid collisions at speeds under 50 mph (80 km/h). The range-topping Legacy Touring XT also gets a wide-angle mono camera, which “provides an even wider field of view for earlier recognition of pedestrians and cyclists when the vehicle enters an intersection at low speeds.”

The 2.5L 4-cylinder horizontally opposed engine remains unchanged, producing a maximum output of 182 hp and a maximum torque of 176 lb-ft, mated to a CVT transmission with an 8-speed manual mode, and the drivetrain is AWD (4WD).

A word from the editorial department

I used to drive a Legacy and now drive an SUV model. It’s true that times are changing and demand for SUVs is on the rise. It’s understandable why Subaru decided to end production of the Legacy. However, it’s also natural to feel sad about the decision.

However, Subaru has many popular models in its lineup and will continue to offer excellent vehicles that are relevant to the times in Japan, the United States, and other regions. Subaru has a long history of providing vehicles that emphasize reliability and performance, and this tradition will continue and evolve to meet new needs.
